So I worked my butt of to get that water-fuel tank ~25 upgrade award. so I can use it on my ships. And most of the time I got to a dock and the "View" button is not even lit up. And sometimes, the button is lit up and I am a little short on cash so I can't buy it yet....so I go gather up the cash I need and come back to that very same space dock and the VIEW button is no longer lit up. So I STILL can't buy it...what determines this?  |

The Water-Tank and other upgrades are available based on the stardock, game date and difficulty level.
Higher difficulties will have less of the good upgrades.
Smaller shipyards will have less upgrades.
The EASY solution is to go after the stardock rumors that expand the inventory of upgrades. You will see them as:
"major Starport expansion on %2$s and many new Star Traders are in business.",
"recent surge in starcraft developments on %2$s and many Upgrades are available there.",

Corey, I did not know if I should add to this or start a new thread, I almost always play on impossible, and I can go several whole games without ever getting some of the better upgrades. I have never been able to get more guns or the exo-crawler on the more star traders rumor and only find the major surge in star ship tech, rarely at best. I put a lot of time in to your game and enjoy it, but I would better enjoy it if I could get more of the upgrades I want more often, even if it required me to do something in return, like sell x amount of this and that at a star port to increase my chances (noticeably) of Star Ship Tech. Thanks

I will not tell you a lie -- this is done carefully and on purpose. The higher difficulty levels have less upgrades and they do not last as long when they do appear.
I am working on an answer to this concern -- how to balance the search for upgrades with the reward. I want it to be fun -- and for you to enjoy it better...
A search is already underway.

Good to know. I've only had the game a week now, and I'm still learning much about it. My current captain is an explorer, and that Exo Crawler looks sweet. I'm playing on Challenging, and have yet to see some of the things I've unlocked. I didn't know upgrades would disappear after a while.

Finding (and getting to them in time) upgrades is a tricky part of the game.

brotherswingWhen I have enough money and it's time to upgrade, I visit halls more frequently for rumors. and the ""recent surge in starcraft developments on %2$s and many Upgrades are available there" rumor sometimes ALL upgrades are available, specially on better planets. Try visiting the cluster of syndicate planets on the south east part of the map, you might find what you're looking for. Although, the exo-crawler, I only find them on the "surge of development" rumor.
