I am very excited to hear HOS will be out shortly. I may have missed a post about this, but how do backers receive their HOS download when it becomes available?

HOS is going to be released early December via the Amazon and Google Play stores, and of course the iTunes store for those iPad/Phone/Pod users. Unfortunately due to the way the different stores operate, there was no way for the TB's to be able to give a free copy of the Android or IOS game to backers. The game is truly awesome though, and pricing has been set quite reasonably, so won't break the bank to buy. The GREAT news though, is that the TBs always find ways to over-deliver, and if you read the latest Kickstarter update, you'll notice that they are now planning on releasing a WINDOWS version of the game in the first-half of next year, and THAT game will be given free to all backers! WOW I say

toddjohn - thanks to slayernz for describing it extremely well. We are looking at submission on December 5 to the markets. Google Play should be available in a few hours, Amazon in a few days, and Apple by December 15 if all goes well! The PC version will follow, hopefully in early 2014, and we will insure every backer gets a full, free download!

HoS is already nearing release? Didn't you guys just enter alpha not that long ago? I mean, granted your games are simple enough aesthetically to get done much quicker than 3D games, but you guys usually cram a ton of complex and possibly convoluted algorithms and calculations into them that its mind-boggling.
Oh well, I wait with bated breath for its release. I've tried to remain as in the dark as I can so it doesn't feel spoiled. One question, though. Will the game feature all the same randomness of your other games? I honestly know nothing about this game.

I'm all over this, but as usual I doubt I'll be able to invest that much time in it. For a good cause though.

HateSolstice - Heroes of Steel will be a unique title for Trese Brothers as it is a story-based game. Non-linear, deep, complex -- but not a sandbox game at its heart. "Alpha" may have been a misnomer (we named it that back in Feb 2013) ... the game was very, very playable and fun by the time we released it to Alpha, so it was probably more of a closed Beta.

Ah, I see. So, what kind of freedom and non-linearity can we expect to see? I'm really excited to see you guys do a story-driven game, but I don't want to see the Trese Bros. magic fall to the wayside. You and Cory excel at sandbox, and since this is your first foray beyond that scope, I feel a little nervous about you possibly not hitting the same stride we've come to expect. I know, I'm worrying over nothing.

So you're getting massive levels where you can explore in a pseudo-non-linear format with characters that you can tweak with significant customization as they level up. It's pseudo-non-linear just because you have objectives (eg find the caravan, escape from blah, locate gleep), and have a starting point with nothing mapped. You can be as cautious or aggressive as you like, exploring every nook and cranny of the map-to-hand, finding every monster to kill, and every chest to open. Alternatively, you can rush through the map trying to find the quickest path (sometimes not easily done). Your characters are definitely customizable - from the gear they equip, to types of offensive and defensive "talents" or spells. You can choose from a myriad of skills, talents, and attributes, and every choice you make has a distinct impact on the game. So that one point you have for Attributes could go to Intelligence, boosting your Spirit level significantly, Strength, boosting your outlander's melee accuracy and damage, Constitution boosts your HP and your ability to soak damage, etc. Within a few levels, you could have two identical characters to begin with ending up with very very distinctive stats. Within a dozen levels, they could be unrecognizable to each other

It looks a lot like old Baldur's Gate. You have objectives to achieve but are free in the way you do it.
