Yesterday there were two major breaches of two major security corporations: The US based USIS; which conducts background checks on behalf of the government, and German-based Gamma International, which develops spyware used in the law enforcement community. GI, The company that makes and sells the world's most elusive cyber weapon, FinFisher spyware, has been hacked and a 40G file has been dumped on the internet. The slick and highly secret surveillance software can remotely control any computer it infects, copy files, intercept Skype calls, log keystrokes -- and now we know it can do much, much more.. Someone very quickly posted torrents to social media sites like Reddit claiming responsibility for the hack. "I hacked in and made off with 40GB of data from Gamma's networks. I have hard proof they knew they were selling (and still are) to people using their software to attack Bahraini activists, along with a whole lot of other stuff in that 40GB."
As for USIS, Homeland Security said after forensic analysis by the FBI that some of its personnel had been affected, leading to concerns that employee data may have been stolen. The company (which conducted the check on Edward Snowden) was also accused by the US Department of Justice of faking more than half a million background checks, including the so-called Washington Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis. Its getting really cyberpunk out here on the webs, but instead of selling paydata to rivals, a lot of this seems more like "fuck the police" electronic activism.

Cg, that story makes me think of the FaceBook friend request I got a few days back from an attractive young women of whom I've never heard and no connection to anyone I know. The profile is very thin with only a few pictures and posts... sock puppet, but for what reason. I've gotten a number of these over the years.

You know what bothers me the most about the digital age? ............ That all the fears that we have about Big Brother monitoring have been proven to be greater than our overactive imagination or the delusions of a crackpot conspiracy theorist. The NSA, with the backing of 2 administrations from both sides of the political spectrum (Republicans and Democrats), has spied on ... EVERYONE. The people that are supposed to be under the control of "We the people" have decided it is their right to lie, obscure and break every darn law they can in the pursuit of National Security. As long as it can be hidden ... its ok! Heck, Unlawful search and seizure, has been changed to: It's ok for seizure as long as there is no proven unlawful search. That is a direct violation of the 4th Amendment. AND YET ... This shit happens: NSA mass collection of phone data is legal, federal judge rules www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/27/judge-rules-nsa-phone-data-collection-legalMoreover, the head of the NSA, DIRECTLY LIED to its oversight committee ... BUT ... he didn't lie! WHAT!? Clapper did not lie to Congress on NSA, says national intelligence counsel www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/04/clapper-lie-congress-nsa-national-intelligence-counselNATIONAL Security .... what the heck does that mean? It isn't the act of protecting the citizens themselves, for the sake of protecting our lives. It is the act of protecting the citizens for the PURPOSE of protecting THE ESTABLISHED RULE OF THE GOVERNMENT. Your life isn't the goal. It's the ripples of discontent that the loss of your life causes that is the goal. Darn it. I am proud to be a citizen of the United States, but ... WTF? rabid

rabidbite, is it weird that every time you post I hear a young, angry anarchist? Not meant at all as a dig (I'm getting pretty disillusioned with how real the CK world has gotten myself), but for some reason, I imagine you at rallies yelling "Down with the man!".

rabidbite, is it weird that every time you post I hear a young, angry anarchist? Not meant at all as a dig (I'm getting pretty disillusioned with how real the CK world has gotten myself), but for some reason, I imagine you at rallies yelling "Down with the man!". WOW. For not being a dig, its ... a heck of a dig. Let's take it from the top. I wish I was young. Not angry. I am, however, vaguely frustrated and disappointed at the dual standard. The laws apply to everyone except those who most need to be regulated by said laws? An extremely worrisome trend that usually leads to conflicts with guns. Nope. Not an anarchist. Nope. I wouldn't be the zealot in a rally screaming "down with the man." That would be very unproductive. I -AM- the guy working with politicians and some shakers to help get better policy, as best as a private citizen can without getting too dirty. See, labeling anyone as an anarchist or liberal or libertarian or progressive or conservative is, and forgive me ... this might sound rude, a way to conform. The instant a label is applied we feel better. We now can place someone's views in a nice little box and apply a stereotype to said someone. Point in fact: Anarchist = the guy screaming "down with the man AT A RALLY". Though not necessarily saying 'crazy nut', it sure does paint with broad strokes towards that. Thus, not a nice thing to say. I know you didn't mean it like that, but simply making sure you understand where I stand. ------------- Now, with that over, let's turn back to the topic. "I hacked in and made off with 40GB of data from Gamma's networks. I have hard proof they knew they were selling (and still are) to people using their software to attack Bahraini activists, along with a whole lot of other stuff in that 40GB." That is a very important statement. It means that the surveillance we've seen not only continues, but proliferates. It also says that an INDIVIDUAL can make a difference. rabid
