sorry xdesperado that's no fun to lose your party. I almost feel bad saying this, but when I looked at your post about your party build I was going to comment on the fact that they're pretty light on defense. My first thought was "they're going to have a really hard time at the gatehouse." It seems like the TBs are committed to putting the saying "The best defense is a good offense" to the test. They've engineered scenarios where you will never be able to kill everyone off fast enough and someone is going to have to take a serious beating, at least momentarily. matrim, thanks for the tip on the Gatehouse. I haven't tried that before, but might, if I make it that far.

I'm not sure what the rules of this challenge are, but I've got a group going on Nightmare and they're probably my best early group yet. I even backed out of one fight just to make sure that I hadn't forgotten and left the difficulty on Normal. They do tons of damage, stay pretty safe and are fairly SP efficient. They're just going into the Troll level to upgrade Tamilin's bow. I think everyone is level 7. Characters are:
Kincaid: Dodge tank with eventual FU support. He's got Sure Parry up to the 2 hit blocking level and then has two points in Cunning Footwork. I'll give him 1 LbtB for movement and then decide when to start working on Flanking. I'm debating about having him use throwing knives too.
Fyona: Will eventually be a decent tank, but is focusing on support first. She did 3 levels of Shield of Cortias and then 2 of Strickening. She's going to focus on SoC for most of E1 though till she maxes it and then bring on Strickening.
Tamilin: Is a short-ranged curser. She's got Torrent of Steel 4 and Deadly Intuition 1. She's using 2ap knives which currently do more damage than her bow. She sets Kincaid up by reducing enemy AP and Vincent up for Lightening Spear.
Vincent: Is the Storm. He's got Lightening Spear 5 and Charged Speed 1 at the moment. He'll go mostly straight up with LS and then probably work on Thundering Blades. It will be hard not to go critical for him (Eye of the Storm), but I want to set the rest of the group up do damage as well. Once Strickening is developed, having Lightening damage and accuracy on everyone will be lots of fun.
This group will be challenged by long ranged enemies, as they excel in massive medium-short range damage. I'll just have to be very careful about taking those Krete levels slow and the COD too, if they get there.

OK
That thing about turrets got me wondering though. Can they work switches like the ones in the first Stratos level?

You mean the engineer stuffed inside the turret right? This is off topic but I also discovered that humans like Marielle Throll can also partake of Reactor Jolt Ordinance.

Well I'm coming off of my most successful trip through Kaldun on Ironman. We had no deaths and only one close call and were comfortably under the turns. I finished the first level with 4 templars in shut down, but that was for their first time and was carefully calculated to launch my Captain into the final sprint for the exit. Anyways I just wanted to share one little pro-tip that I found myself using and that I think contributed to my success. It's a small thing but, on the second level of Kaldun, small things make a big difference.
Basically the tip is that when you're sprinting and need to get a Templar somewhere in a hurry (say your engineer to cap that TP one turn earlier), you should use other templars to open doors for him/her. Planning out, who is going to open doors ahead of time can end up getting you ahead a turn and accomplishing things with less heat. You can either use a Templar who is next to the door to kick it in while someone else charges through, or you can use a templar with enough AP to open and pass through before your runner. Either-way in tight passages with lots of doors this can make a huge difference and staying one step ahead of a Goliath or Spitter can easily save you a Templar.

contributor for POTUS, seriously, he'd probably be better at it than most-all in the running... I'd hate to put that much stress and crap flinging on him tho. Hah! Let's see, if we're going to make this happen I'm going to need to fill some cabinet posts. I'll take CdrPlatypus as my VP. - Cory Trese gets Secretary of Defense. - fallen will be the diplomat, Secretary of State for him. - ntsheep will be the Secretary of Education (what could go wrong!?!) - johndramey seems responsible, Secretary of the Treasury - John Robinson will be Attorney General (I sense lots of wisdom there). - slayernz, as a moderator, will get Secretary of Homeland Security. - En1gma is as active as anybody here, hmmm, Secretary of Energy. -We'll call on Officer Genious to fill the Secretary of Health and Human Services role. - Brutus Aurelius we're going to need you as Secretary of the Interior. I've got a few more posts to fill, I'll have to keep my eyes open for other candidates.

Just found a secret door in Vermin Warren Are you sure it's Vermin Warren and not Undertunnels? I haven't been through in a long time. I know they added some new doors when they added crystals though.

Even your melee only classes had OW in TA RPG. Guess I need to go back and play it again. I don't remember that.

bobc it's like that because of potential new content. We're likely going to have to continue on from Freeport so I left some room by switching the directions. Once the rest of the content comes out I will revise and, if possible, get the directions right.

I think if you want to go TA classic, you have to say no OW.

I do like the idea of going all soldiers and being forced to really develop some of the different branches. They are probably the most versatile unit. After playing the Specialist challenge, I wonder how much influence the lower cost of soldiers would have. It seems like in a lot of levels you would just maybe be able to field one more unit. Now with scouts, you might be able to get some crazy big numbers deployed...

Actually Kanly you need to finish it out. You've got the potential to unseat Brutus Aurelius. Neptune Fight!

Well, we talked about extending so everyone can finish, but I think we can already declare Neptunes the Winner. Well played gentlemen! We can also declare Brutus Aurelius the Champion for posting the highest overall score (in fact I think he underestimated, the bonus for Ironman-nodeath is "8"). Kinda wishing right now that I wouldn't have told xdesperado multiple times that this will definitively settle the Hydra-Neptune question. Maybe he was right afterall... Thanks to everyone who played. Others are welcome to give the challenge a shot, even if it's just for fun.

I'm not too worried about it. I've learned now to send a scout team in first to see what nasty surprises you've created for us first. I suppose when this team beats it they will get the chance to replay and they can adjust their difficulty so it's not a major problem.
