Can someone let me know what determines whether you're arrested and imprisoned or completely killed when "captured"? I've been killed when I expected just to be arrested and vice versa.

Enemy Warship, Reputation < -35 => Execute Pirates, Reputation < -55 => Execute Bounty Hunter < -25 => Execute
Hope that helps. What edition are you playing?

So to be sure I understand, if my rep hasn't fallen below the numbers you've specified I'll simply be arrested? Also, playing Elite. I bought the upgrade and ship designer.

You are correct in your understanding. The game should be providing some warning, however. I wanted to confirm that for you, which is why I asked. Thanks for posting!

In regards to rep levels I do have a couple further queries. 1) at what point do factions stop offering the option to buy a pardon. 2) I've noticed that after being imprisoned, negative rep is reset to -5. Is it possible to turn yourself in to a faction that only wants to jail you in order to reset your rep with a faction that would kill you upon capture? (Example: Cedar rep= -15, DE Valtos rep= -55. If I allowed Cedar to capture me would they jail me and my rep with these factions be at -5 when I'm paroled?)

You stop getting offered a pardon when your cash won't cover it, I think.

Pardons stop around -10 rp. For the execution values, it is very very important to take into account your current actions as if you are close to the threshold of execution, your encounter may push you over that limit. Example, you are -32 rp with rychart and a warship stops you. If you attack then surrender, you'll have incurred a rp penalty so outcome might equal Death! Also if you have restricted cargo, you'll get rp loss so execution is possible. Rule of thumb for me is don't surrender if you can't buy a pardon And don't surrender to steel song at all ... kill them with extreme prejudice (Combined the two posts into one)

Then there are weird mixtures. Bounty Hunter plus death warrant always equals to peace. Warship plus rank shouldn't be worse than jail. Although maybe from certain reputation...

1) Earn lots of rep 2) Buy as much rank as your rep allows 3) During a trade embargo, trade lots of illegal goods at the opposing faction's exchange 4) Bingo, now you have high rank but very low rep. P.S. Wonder what happens if your trade was so offensive that you have worse than -35 RP but positive rank, and then you encounter a warship?

redartrats You survive. But if you surrender, the ship arrests you and therefore strips you off all badges with the house or syndicate... And half of your money. Edit: Maybe you can die even with huge rank if you have really negative reputation... But I can't confirm it yet. What is for sure though... You get stripped of all rank if you meet a Warship and the rep is under -15

Pardon levels also depend on your character class and rumor state.
