Hi, my name is Bryan, and I'm addicted to HoS.
This game has occupied so much of my mind, my time, and cost me so much sleep that I feel like I can't be alone here.
Consider this a support thread, that we can come together and share our stories of how we got to this dark, albeit awesome place. We can talk about how many groups we've made, the times we try to relate our struggles to friends and family members that neither play, nor understand the struggles of a double Deathkin spawn flanked by Verminkin Shamans and a swarm of archers.
This is your thread, let the healing begin. Then go start (yet) another group.

My name is Stephen and, though I've only been playing HoS for about a month and a half, I've already completely lost count of the number of times my wife has said, "You're playing that game AGAIN?!?!?!?!" If my post count is any indication, I also spend way too much time on this forum. Let's see...joined the forum on 9/30/14...today is 11/18/2014...104 posts in 49 days...carry the 1...2.12 posts per day average. I suspect my posting pace is increasing, too, the more I play. Let's see if I can catch up to En1gma, who's at 4.96 posts per day average. That's a pretty tough goal to reach, though. There is something about this game that lends itself to addictive behavior.

mrsarfa.... Almost 5 posts per day? That's scary. I'm even more concerned now about my well-being...

I'm not sure this will help the thread - but do you mind sharing in a few words what about Heroes is so captivating, for you, personally? Thanks you'll help us and our sock puppet masters build even better game-traps [ ... clearly joking, right? ... There are no sock puppet masters ]

fallen- For me, it's like chasing that White Rabbit. The game is so challenging, and requires such a time investment, that I find myself repeatedly abandoning group after group, trying to find the perfect combination of characters, Talents, Skills, and tactics. I've played so many groups that even though I don't do the math like John Robinson, or play on Nightmare like CdrPlatypus, I still know exactly how I want to build out the group, so even though I don't have a plan, I know exactly how to get where I want to be. It's almost become second nature. I'm not kidding when I say that I lose sleep on this game.

En1gma - thanks for the good response - high challenge (Nightmare), time investment, perfect combo group. I think for me its probably all the different possible tactical decisions that sum up to be a group strategy, and chasing that "White Rabbit" group strategy. Each set of tactical decisions leads to a pretty different game experience -- who is tanking, damage dealing, buffing, really drives how combat operations and drives the tactical choices you make on the ground in each fight. That's why I loose sleep to Heroes. Damn you Nightmare Ladders.

I was in bed at 10. Stayed up until 11:30. Playing 'Just one more fight- one more fight and I'll turn it off I swear...' I've definitely done that before. The "just one more fight" mantra never seems to work for me. I'm not sure this will help the thread - but do you mind sharing in a few words what about Heroes is so captivating, for you, personally? Thanks you'll help us and our sock puppet masters build even better game-traps [ ... clearly joking, right? ... There are no sock puppet masters ] fallen - There are a couple of things going on that make the game so addictive for me. The first is that I'm just floored by the attention to detail that you and Cory Trese have when creating the HoS world. I'm not just referring to the story, which is also awesome, but both the little things, like how items are priced, and the big things, like how precisely everything is balanced so that the game is extremely challenging, but also extremely fair. It is quite amazing. The other thing for me -- and this kind of springs from how well-balanced and detailed the game is -- is that the possibilities for how to build your group are nearly limitless and almost anything can set off ideas for a group build. For example, when I was updating the weapon list to include weapons available for purchase in Ep. 2, I noticed this one: Name | Type | Governing Attribute | AP / Accuracy / Parry | Damage | Price | Fremat Runkah | 2-H Spear | Strength
| 4 / 8 / 7 | 77-142 | 10101
|
Besides wondering if the price was a computer programming inside joke, I also noticed that this is a 4AP weapon. I didn't even know those existed. Immediately, my brain started trying to think of ways to make this weapon work with a Vraes build. Like, "Let's see...he would need Burst of Speed for the extra MP to ensure that he still has 4AP by the time he gets to the enemy. With Juggernaut, he could get multiple swings in one round, which would be sick. In order to make sure he gets the killing blow, though, the party would probably need a fair amount of AOE, to weaken multiple enemies and open up the killing blow opportunities for Vraes. Also, since he only gets one swing per round, it's got to count, so he'll need to level up Polearms from the get-go and possibly invest in Natural Mastery as well." Anyway, just seeing that one item set off a chain reaction in my brain, trying to figure out how that item could be made to work in-game. I absolutely love that.

Seeing that weapon I went to start another new group, mrsarfa... Once I did the first fight, I snapped out of it, deleted it, and went back to my furthest group... My name is Bryan...
