I downloaded the free version and played it for a bit and decided to buy it, hoping it would unlock the story modes and it didn't.. So I assume they haven't been released yet?

We are still working on writing them right now (literally, right now!)
If you are unhappy with the purchase or feel like you were tricked, PLEASE e-mail me and I will refund you for your full purchase price.
We did not mean for this to happen. In the next release I will fix it so what is added by Elite is more clear.
Very sorry...

Just had a thought. Will the story be long or short. Also once you are done with the story will your game revert to a kind of sandbox mode? Or is the end of the story the end of the game, for that character? I know that it's still early days for the story, so I appreciate if you don't really wanna say.

Some of the stories will be long, some will be short (and very, very hard.)
When the game is done the "alternate endings" will yield alternate sandboxes.
For example, in one storyline we're developing the character must make a permanent enemy of at least one corporation. that storyline will yield a special type of sandbox where several zones are slightly different and the character can no longer be friendly with, say, AzTek or Blue Ox.
So our goal is to use storylines to expand the universe, add new content, drive upgrades to Elite and expose new custom designed sandbox modes.

but if you loose that will be the end of the storyline probably.
i'd really like to feature 10+ playable characters before we hit 4.0 which means that we'll have a lot of permutations on the sandbox.

and hopefully with a very high density of sub-quests and additional map zones, even after the core storyline is completed the game will still be fun.

PS: if anyone has a reference to another game that did the "story mode yields sandbox" method and did it well, I'd love a link or a name so I can go do research

The only game that jumped into my head was the X series. But that's a space sim a little like Elite. I'll keep thinking.
