Maybe one thing I did not think of, but should have, is scaling this to difficulty. I could eliminate it on lower difficulties. What difficulty are you on, FeniksoIf you're playing one of the lower ones maybe we can compromise =)

Tried with 3 and one nearly died . I have declared "seems more like...". As I do not see many options how to improve it with my lvl 50 captain. I thought that it is mainly Piloting skill, Morale, ship condition and number of sails on the ship. I also do not see any change between lvl 15 captain and lvl 50 captain. I am not arguing, but can you point me to what should I try? It seems that I am missing something what did not have as big impact before the change maybe.

What difficulty are you playing on?
I could probably be convinced to remove it from the easy ones and leave it on in Hard+

"A Fast Ship is not an Efficient one. Previously, the Fast Ship was universally better than the Slow Ship." You are right and actually I like it a lot! The change was just too fast for me to cope with it. And I thought that my best captain is going to be able to handle it. I am on Impossible, of course . That is why I do not want to argue, just to know whats up and what can I do. I do not see my options right now. Sell the ship, get another? Get the same ship, but with water-fuel tank? Do something else to improve the consumption to at least 0.2? How would I do that? These are my thoughts. And if I pick any option, it will require some effort. One of my captains has 0.4, but I just do not see how he got there... Does Stealth affect it also?

OK, OK I am defeated.
I'm going to go back and re-test / re-evaluate scaling this based on difficulty.
The current curves will be probably used for "Crazy" and decrease below that towards a 0 penalty on Basic/Normal.
Impossible's fuel use will probably be tweaked up. I think that is a great way to keep my favorite difficulty level challenging.

Pilot, Intimidate, 20/30 breaks on Engine/Solar, keep maximum repairs, avoid any crew upgrades that add Crew count. If you are on Impossible than I have no mercy at all. That difficulty is already too easy IMO

but I do salute you for playing on Impossible.
I wouldn't sell the ship -- it's still a great fighting vessel, just not suited for a long hauler across deep space.

hahaha yes, I did see that thread. =)
Interesting that your follow up was "too much fuel use made me quit playing for a few days."
I would have thought you'd have been pleased, fuel consumption is the largest difficulty factor in the game.
I guess it really is impossible to make people happy as can be evidenced by all our review averages.
I have really been thinking that I want to remove all the odds advantages in Impossible, especially in combat. Another day perhaps

It made me quit as I had to think and prepare strategy for my captains. I had to know more about what happened, as it changed the rules for them in the middle of mission, pirate raid, exploring deep space, whatever.
I did a few stupid moves with the first one after the change and he nearly died, so I had to be cautious... Also the first thing when I considered it a bug, as it was not in the change log, made me stop and wait.
As I have said -- I AM pleased if this is the way it is going to be. I would be pissed if I took some effort to cope with the change and next version it is removed.

no that rule is here to stay. it will probably get more fuel use penalty on impossible and be scaled down for lower difficulties.

Damn you, micro-meteorites! I am so, so, SO sorry. My best captain actually has consumption 0.0 if her ship is not hit and solar sail is not scratched just a few seconds after start from stardock. I should have double checked. My fault, I have missed the damage report. Shame on me!
I bet that Alia will throw the guy who insisted on "perfect ship condition" out of the airlock.

My best captain actually has consumption 0.0 The update threw me for a loop too. What ship and stats are you using to get 0.0? Captain Nemo is 62 Pilot, 13 Intimidation... but methinks maybe I don't have enough engines per hull in the RSS Zendu Masterdu. Too lazy to go across the quadrant and check if the RSS Spear Mint is any better. Cory is absolutely right though about the balance. I've never even touched any of the slower ships because there was no point. If it was not a Fast/Quick or a Zendu Cutter, Capt Nemo had no use for it. My captains only die when they meet someone (or something) quick enough to close range and board... so I'm very nervous about anything that's not Fast/Quick. I may give something slow a go with a new character though.

Greetings mate. Captain Alia was Pilot 75, Intimidate 15. In fully upgraded Royal Class with Engines 45 and Sails 48 per 20 Hull. But it seems to be on edge. Any damage or Morale drop and problems can arise. I have hired mechanic recently to deal with the damages.
As for balancing, I really like it and totally agree. It really adds feeling of dangerous deep space travel in such a fragile ship. Some of my captains will certainly consider slower ships and hundreds of heavily armed marines :-).

Now I'm finding in my Jango Class that when I press the "Cargo" button it says fuel consumption should be 0.501 in Red and 0.00 in Green, but it's actually consuming about 0.1 per sector in Green. Sails and Engines and Crew are all at 100%.
Is this a bug or a feature?
