From my understanding: - My mass driver ship shoot at xeno mass driver ship at range 1. Expect counterattack - My mass driver ship shoot at xeno missile ship at range 1. No counterattack from xeno missile ship. - Xeno missle ship shoots at my missile ships at any range, expect counterattack. - Xeno mass driver ships shoot at my mass driver ship at range 1, expect counterattack. - My missile ship shoots at a xeno missile ship at any range, expect counterattack. - My missile ship shoots at a xeno mass driver ship at range 1, should be no counterattack....
In my current game where I have many missile ships, I get counterattacks from xeno mass driver ships if I shoot missile at them from range 1. Why? A bug?

That sounds like expected behavior to me. Your torpedo ships should try to keep range.

That sounds like expected behavior to me. Your torpedo ships should try to keep range. So... If a xeno missile ship shoots my mass driver ship at range 1, my mass driver ship will counterattack if all criteria are correct. Is that correct? I am late game enough right now to park my mass driver ship in front of the xeno missile fleet to find that out.

hlo -- it depends on the build of your ship (Sensor, primary Training selection) and the AI's ship design. The answer to your "Why?" question is the above factors, and the way they are aligned for game balance.
