CP all the way. I see these hab units being like giant cities, so it makes sense that they would be able to produce cp without the need for factories to me.

I voted for defense -- I see them as huge cities, and advanced towers or hives would have the ability to defend themselves, and might even maintain a standing infantry force in case of invasion.

Trade Points because major cities get big businesses, and big businesses love themselves some trade!

Love the thought that late game HAB units gain additional attributes; HAB’s were the one upgrade that felt very vanilla. Even though a housed population is the foundation of a successful colony, the upgrades currently feel like a necessary evil to keep the masses happy and not something that improve the colony to me.
While I could see an explanation for a massive mega-housing unit becoming like a specialized city that generates any of the resources, here are the three that makes the most sense to me:
Pop+spice( or other moral bonus allowing higher levels?): At the end of the day the planets population return to a home that include a personalized AI, robot helpers, virtual reality or massaging hot tubs that remove all of the stress of the day.
Pop + TP( the one I voted for): The massive HAB complexes have always had small markets and shops to meet internal needs, but now the new buildings connect these specialized bazars and unique home made goods to the larger trade network. Pop+CP: We are already building cities and housing around factories and telecommuting some jobs, it is only a matter of time before people will never have to leave home to go to work.
Another option, have you considered each faction having their own housing that reflects their values later on? De Valtos could have the bazaar like hab units, while Steel would naturally want to live in fortresses. Heck I have always pictured Javat like dwarves wanting to live in their mines so it might even make sense to add minerals. I think it would add a nice flavor, but the factions already tend to be heavy in their specialized resource and this may be too much.

I'm not so sure the civilians would *want* to live in such units as much as they'd be compelled to. XD I like the idea though! Cool thought.

I love the idea of each faction getting their own specialized Hab units- would add so many more dynamics to the game.
At what level would these habs start gaining these bonuses?

I tend to agree with Officer Genious and En1gma . Each faction should have Habs specialized to their own specialties. DeValtos: TP bonus Cadar: CP or Defense Rychart: Spice or EP Thulun: Research Javat: Mines Song: Defense To me it makes the most sense, as the Factions would build their settlements around what they specialize in. Many port cities, for example, are full of commerce and business, wile cities built near military bases seem to be built around catering to the needs of the soldiers.

I agree with the faction specific habs. Though if only one option I'd want research because late game that's the hardest thing to get.

I also think that there should be multiple advanced Hab units with different secondary bonuses, but I don't think it should be faction-soecific. Factions already have faction-specific habitation. I would like different advanced habitation upgrades with different bonuses to be available to all factions with usage dependent on the player. Some players would build lots of RP housing ( khamya9), others TP housing ( Officer Genious) and others defense housing ( Cory Trese) or mining housing (myself). That isn't to say that I would mind javat having the BEST mining housing or Richard having the BEST research housing, but some base mining and research housing should be available to all.

Poor Cory, he asks us which one we want and our response is ALL OF THEM! Brutus Aurelius I like your list even more than what I was picturing. I had thought Thulan would want spice/morale bonus, but that is probably because I always picture them as pompous aristocrats. Research is probably a lot more useful and matches with their story.

@stafixer,what faction based housing do we already get? As far as I know only steel song has any and they only get one per colony, even they can't make more.

Factions currently, and will continue to, exhibit unique abilities in their Faction specific "Core" upgrades.
All of these Faction specific upgrades include Hab Units.
Steel Fortress 2 * Steel Fortress 3 * Military Academy 1 * Naval Academy 1 * Military Academy 2 * Naval Academy 2 *
