Just curious, does "overage" ends eventually? I am buying metal @ $119 a piece and selling them to House Thunn @ 540. Is it possible for me to...say, keep buying out from planet A, sell them to planet B, depress planet B's prices till it reach A's level, then ship them all out to planet D?
(Other than the fact I just violated embargo law of all three syndicate and push my faction to legendary criminal lord status...)

Yes ... ages ago there the surplus/shortage only expired when the rumor expired. Think of doing exactly what you were thinking but with artifacts and making miiiiiiiiiiillions!
Now depending on how much you have sold or bought, the surplus or shortage can end. For large surpluses (ie, 300 units of x, you should be able to shift the vast majority of those units. They just won't restock the quantity so after the 300 are gone, the surplus price ends).
For Shortage situations, every unit you sell the planet increases the chance that the surplus will end. Some adopt the strategy of selling small bits at a time while constantly topping up the cargo at nearby planets. That way as soon as you see the "Shortage ended" message, you just sell all of the remaining cargo at once.
