Exploration Casualties

I have a question about exploring. Is there any stat or skill that will up my crew's survival chance? I love to explore to make money but it seems like my entire crew gets wiped out on a regular basis, even on just rugged planets. I have put points into explorer and pilot and warrior and wisdom, though I can't recall how many. Is there a way to not spend half my game trying to recruit crew, or a way to get more than the red shirt variety?

Not so much right now, but the exploration system is being overhauled. Check some of my threads about it.

And until the genocide bug ( ) is resolved, I recommend going down to the surface with only 30 or so guys in your crew. It's easier to recharge that way.
