Why not add a merchant that can enchant or improve weapons and armor for you?
I think that adding fire damage to a weapon would be awesome, or much later having the ability to bind a sp drain effect to a blade would be amazing... Having a weapon improve accuracy, or resistance to magic could allow groups to fill in different areas that they find lacking...
Smiths could, for a price, improve the armor rating for armor, increase base damage on weapons as well as raise their parry/dodge...
I'm sure this would need to be pricey to avoid influencing the game, but this could be a fun twist, and could make many weapons and armor more memorable for the player, instead of just something to replace as soon as possible.

Enchantment? Enchantment! On topic though, it would be a nice addition, but I could see balancing issues come up quickly especially with dual wielding, seeing as how the game is balanced already.

What about temporary effects such as a sharpening? Pay x gold for x turns of effect sharp.
