It is time to start adding Encounters to the Backrooms of the NBZ.
We can't let the captains in Age of Pirates have all the fun with their Tavern Encounters.
Toss out your ideas -- what kind of good and bad is going to come to find you in the backrooms of the NBZ?

Encounters? give an example as to what is possible?
I was immediately thinking of a random encounter where a knight bursts in and says "Your time is up, Chummer" or whatever it says when you normally have an assassination mission and you tell the patron that you're gonna kill them.
Others ... A person stumbles past you and accidentally drops a money vchip (or whatever it's called) - you then get the option to return it to them or keep it - outcome - if returned, you could either get a reward or nothing - if you keep it, you could either have a confrontation, or you just get bonus money
Can also work with other items dropped or "misplaced" like medikits or even ammo
You could have a person come up to you saying "I desperately need a way out of here." triggering an escort mission
You could get a person saying "I need someone to take this package/item somewhere" triggering a delivery mission
You could have a terrorist act happen - bomb going off, and you have to either - get out - assist - rescue
You could have someone spike your food - lose HP or MP ... or just wake up the next day with something missing?
You could have someone giving you a rumor
You could have someone saying to you "There have been a swarm of refugees overrunning Deep Space and lowering the value ... oh wait, this isn't a spice hall", before quickly shuffling out

slayernz - anything goes -- I will work with what creativity you all can add! The Encounters are the screens that pop up as you walk around the NBZ and offer you a few options, if that wasn't clear. Your suggestions are great so far! +1, just the kind of stuff I can use

How about a fight breaks out and you either join in to stop it or not. If you choose to help stop it, you get a free pass to get in next time.

A mysterious note is dropped in front of you but you don't see who dropped it. The note tells you "Meet me at x within y time". - if you choose to go to that location, there is a chance of: -- Rumor -- Exchange of items like a vchip -- Ambush -- Mission

Someone challenges you to a duel? Accept = Increased reputation and heat Hostile encounter 1:1 - slight chance of an ambush maybe 10% Decline = Loss of reputation and 20% chance of hostile encounter anyway Intimidate = If successful, Increase reputation, increase heat. If fail, then hostile encounter
Someone offers to join your crew - Based on your reputation - higher = higher % chance of this happening

Gambling encounter - someone tries to rope you into a lucrative game of tiddlywinks. - Decline - nothing ventured, nothing gained. - Accept outcome 1 = win x number of Y. - Accept outcome 2 = there is a raid by the enforcers. you have to save against stealth + perception in order to avoid getting caught in such a highly illegal game. - If you fail, you gain heat and lose RP.

Someone offers you a prized relic - a dead Ratkin stuffed in a jar of preserving liquid. and then down the track, another encounter (triggered by your inventory) Someone is looking for a Ratkin specimen for "scientific research" You can have this double-encounter with lots of different things. It will make you really decide whether to spend the hundreds or thousands of Y now, for a potential gain in the future (commodities trading) Oh oh ... you could even have it so that if you are inspected at a checkpoint, they might confiscate the item in question if you're unlucky. You could stash your relic in a safehouse, but then you'll be told in that second encounter that you'll need to bring it to them within x days or the deal's off

You could have a citizen tip you off about some valuable data/weapons/armor/ammo/etc that is temporarily at x for y time. If you go, you could offer to help or steal it.

We have a taxi driver someplace that went into the game, caused bugs, and then got yanked. Be nice to have him stop by in an encounter.
I've liked the idea of having one of your taxi drivers be kidnapped. You must rescue him, and of course you cannot use him while he is captive.
Somebody wants you to take a pack of dogs across town to a kennel. If you are a hunder, no problem. If you have great intimidation, no problem. But if you do not -- well you aren't the alpha of the pack, so you cannot control the pups. They escape, they cause damage, you have to fight or pay off angry storekeepers.

How about a transportation contact who can offer you a ride on the thopter or a trip through the gateway or tunnels regardless of reputation? How about some action from the joy girls/guys - special pillow talk rumors - angry pimp encounter - robbed - mp increase Narco dealers who offer experimental drugs Chance to join a terrorist organization for a plant explosives job Chance to join a retired operative for "one last" job with a decent payout Help someone with revenge - joy girl aka "Unforgiven", government employee upset at 'the man', Dr. who wants to shut down a competitor etc.

grävling, I really like the taxi driver kidnapping idea. You either have to pay a ransom for the driver to be released, OR you just go in guns blazing and kill the bastards holding him/her. OBVIOUSLY most people should take option 2 because it's the most rewarding

There are some really good ideas here and grävling has touched on something I've been pondering. Would it be possible for a Backroom encounter to trigger a chain of events rather than a single event so that it could play out like a mini-mission but built out of existing job types? You are in the Backroom and are told by a senior faction member that one of the elite has been kidnapped and they want you to take the ransom. - You can take the job and continue - You can take the job then do a bunk with the ransom money You go to the ransom site and negotiate with the captors - Pay the ransom and get the hostage back - Haggle using intimidation etc; if succesful you pocket the difference, if not then a fight kicks off Bit of a scuffle with a random chance each turn that the hostage gets caught in the cross fire and killed If successful then return the hostage to the Backroom A similar scenario would be that you are told by a senior faction member that one of the elite has been kidnapped and they do not know where they are but have a lead and they want you to rescue them. You head out to a location and run a capture mission against a suspect Take the suspect to a designated faction safehouse for interrogation - Suspect dies under interrogation - Suspect refuses to talk - You get the location of the hostage Head over to the new location and rescue the hostage - Try and negotiate for release - Kill everybody and spring the hostage - There is random chance each turn that the hostage gets caught in the cross fire and killed, but if you turned up unannounced then stealth could lower the odds of this If successful then return the hostage to the Backroom
