So I got got by this dang bug again - I think. Here's the situation:
I had 9/10 health returning from a very prosperous and very deadly exploration run out on a fringe planet. My ship was loaded up with goods and my crew was a paltry 1/71 thanks to the dangers of that planet. As I was returning through red space, I noticed that I suddenly wasn't consuming any water-fuel. I wanted to test this out, so I went back out into red space. I confirmed that my suddenly depleted crew was no longer consuming any water-fuel even in red space, which I thought was interesting.
Then I started running into ships. Ship after ship after ship. Like 7 or 8 in a row, at least. I'm in good with every political group, so I acknowledged all the friendlies and retreated from all the pirates. Suddenly, I got a notification that my character had died. I must confess that I went on tilt at that moment and simply closed the game. It was a very well developed character with a great ship and plenty of cash on hard. I was a little upset that it was suddenly gone.
But, now that I'm calmed down, I felt I should share my experience and hopefully save someone else the same situation. I'm not sure if it was the zero-crew bug, if it was space events that were going unannounced (I had 10 artifacts on board in red space), or if I was somehow taking damage from each encounter. No clue whatsoever. Hopefully, you will have some sort of an idea as to what might have happened.
In closing, I feel I have to mention that as an explorer-only player, this bug has begun to significantly detract from my enjoyment of the game. Before your last announced bug fix, I went over a week without playing because I wanted to avoid what essentially just happened to me. From my perspective, this flaws with the current game are just to punitive for someone to play an explorer class.
