Or could I just buy each episode piecemeal only if I feel like playing the next one (and save 3 whole cents)? Or am I going to be missing things?

Blitz - you will miss nothing. 100% the same, just a difference in purchasing model.

I would like to see more of an incentive to by elie going forward with new release. Otherwise why bother with two editions?

I would like to see more of an incentive to by elite going forward with new release. Otherwise why bother with two editions? Whilst I agree with you on HoS (where buying Elite is actually the worse option by a tiny, tiny margin and provides no benefits whatsoever to the purchaser), other releases have been vastly different. When you look at ST, TA, CK, AoP and STE, you get a wealth of additional content for your money. I'm also fine with the PDLC in ST and CK, which are priced fairly and have been developed separately from the core game, unlike the extra HoS heroes which cost more than an entire episode of fantastic gameplay and dialogue. In short, I think the hundreds of updates across all games and the volume of extra content you get in Elite is well worth it with the first generation of TB games. It's also worth it with STE (although I'd have liked the reskins to have been included with Elite rather than IAP). With HoS however, I think the Brothers dropped the ball on that one when it comes to providing an 'Elite' version.

I picked up Elite when it was on sale for $2, did that sale also apply to the free IAP version? Also, I think this game has a very playtime to dollar ratio, I love it.

bowuserthing - thanks! IAPs are difficult to put on sale for us, so the sales usually only apply to Elite. You can see Star Traders 4X Empires on sale for 60% off right now ($2). Heroes of Steel is a story game. The Elite content is the story.

I won't assume to know what mataeus meant (no offense to you mataeus, I simply mean that I could be thinking along entirely different lines than you and you might hate to get roped into my complaint!), but I'd argue that HoS Elite doesn't seem to have any obvious advantages over Free. Sure, you get the episodes immediately when they release, but that's not substantially different than simply buying new episodes when they release. When I think "Elite" version, I'd be thinking of having some advantage over a Free version, especially given the past Apps. In that regard, I found HoS to be personally a bit disappointing (which is why I stuck with Free and didn't get Elite). I wouldn't change it now for obvious reasons, but those are my 2 cents (this keyboard has everything but a cents button... go figure).

While I do have to say elite comes with a nifty gold border that matches the other TB apps on my screen

That is true. Although, of all the icons that need a change, the CK one looks blurry next to the clear and crisp images of HoS, ST, STE and AoP... Say, fallen...

While I do have to say elite comes with a nifty gold border that matches the other TB apps on my screen In fact, for all future games the gold rimmed icon will be the only difference between the two apps. That and the purchasing model. See ST 4X Empires. You could ask the same question-- "Is there any reason to buy 4X Empires Elite?" Answer: "If you like the gold rimmed icon. Everything else is the same, you won't miss a thing. You just buy what you like as IAPs instead of as a paid app." Maybe the answer is "more flexibility in purchasing." In 4X Empires, you can not buy Elite but still purchase the Ship Skin Packs. In Heroes, you can decide to invest $1 instead of $4 to see if you really enjoy the game. Great for the customer imho.
