I was just wandering around the A12 work isle and ended up In a dirty little back room dive. Just minding my own business sipping vudka and listening to the gripes and the gossip, when I'm approached by someone wanting to hire out some KH mercs. Now, I had to turn em down, of course. I don't take on runners or allies. Not the two legged kind anyways. But this got me thinking. "Why are exclusive KH mercs hired out of an AzTec owned and controlled area?"

The bartender slides you another vudka and warns you, "Careful chummer, asking those kind of questions might get you hurt."

My curiosity meter is definitely pegging the red line now. I take a last swallow of the vudka as I cautiously look around for threats. Jazz and Kraze, my hunds, start a low growl sensing a change in my manner. Not seeing any thing to be too concerned about, I silence my hunds with a wave and call the bartender back over. "What do you..." I start to ask but then stop. A fleeting thought from days gone by enters my brain "Curiosity killed the cat" I think to myself "Too much might do the same for a hunder. Best let it lie for now." I mentally shrug then order another drink.

As you sip on the next drink, you notice a pair of men at the bar watching you over their soy-grog. They're weathered faces show they are lowly Citizens and laborers in the A12 Factory. They are watching you as slyly as they can, but they are very obvious to your trained eyes. They whisper back and forth and gesture toward a back booth where an AzTek corp suit is sitting and enjoying a drink with her beauty-boy.

I downed the last of my vudka and throwing caution out the door walked towards the booth the two citizens were indicating. The booth where the AzTec suit sat cuddling her boy toy. Maybe it was the scars on my face and the purposeful walk like I owned the joint, maybe it was the fact that I was flanked by two hunds. Or maybe it was the Steel Wave ll showing under my coat. Whatever it was, nobody tried to stop me. She looked up when I approached the booth, but before she could say anything I growled, "So what's the story with the KH mercs?"

The beauty-boy stiffened and sat up as the Knight approached. The kind of edge-of-his-seat sitting that made Chance think he was maybe more than just a nice looking toy. As the Knight approached the lady with the Hunds in tow, there was a lot of shifting in the bar around him. The two workers at the bar stood up, the bruiser from the door -- sporting ugly dermal plating -- moved toward the booth. Three or four other parties in the dive bar stood up. Chance suddenly felt he might be making a mistake.
Up close, she was a real looker. She just blinked her big eyes at the question. The entire place was on edge. Chance's fingers felt twitch near the Steel Wave.

The room had gone still. Deathly still. A low growl came from Kraze as he sniffed the air. The tension was heavy and palpable.
"Curiosity killed the hunder", sang in my head. "Shut up", I told the singer.
It only took a nano second to take stock of the situation. Bad. I really should mind my own business. Oh well. Too late now. Three maybe four behind me, one in front. And that AzTec suit is probably armed. If this goes the way it looks like its going to, vok injectors will be pumping combat chems into the hunds soon giving them an edge. Their synthskin suits should be enough to protect them. Hopefully the shock maws keep them from leaving dead bodies. I won't come out of this unscathed, but hopefully my own dermal sheathing and the new gx mesh jacket I got from kuozu will be enough. They expect me to go for the Steel Wave, but I've always been better at brawling. Pretty boy will be first... I looked at the suit. Yeah, she was a looker and in another time and place...well it doesn't matter. I'm a Cyber Knight. And she has answers I want. "Well, do I get an answer, or are we gonna dance?"

The suit stood up moving with a languid grace. The beauty-boy stayed seated, coiled up like a spring.
She stepped far too close, looking up into his face and speaking low - "Knight Horizon is a registered Security Company. They guard things, Knight." Her breath smelled of vudka and a spicy scent, and then Chase felt it ... a sluggishness creeping into his shoulders, down his back. She was sporting high-end pheros, and she'd gassed him. Just enough to take his edge off if things went downhill.
"AzTek awarded Knight Horizon a 30 year contract over A12 four years ago when the plant opened. They plan to keep it, and they've got an army of their mercenaries here." She was still too close, almost brushing him. Chance's hand twitched closer to the Steel Wave. Backing down wasn't his style, and with the Hunds at his back, they stood face-to-face. The place bristled with pent up energy, violence, death.
"You want one? You got the cred, Knight?"

This is not good. The effects of the pheros were making me lightheaded and I could feel my fighting edge starting to slip just a little. If this goes bad I'll be the chummer fed to the fish. I took a small step to the side and shifted my weight, trying to gain a little distance. I wasn't sure what she was selling exactly, and I thought it might be better that way. This arrangement AzTec had with Knight Horizon didn't seem to be an agreeable one. Maybe AzTec was having second thoughts about losing the A12 and the money they were making here. Maybe that's why the KH was here in force with a sitting army. To "protect" their interests. I shook my head and looked at the AzTec face (I couldn't think of her as anything else now). She stared back, waiting. It wasn't in me to back down, but mama didn't raise a fool-despite any evidence to the contrary. "Never had much use for Knight Horizon" I said.

"If you change your mind, I can be your Persona-Fixer. I know the right people, I can get you vets." And with that, she slipped back into her chair, and the entire bar took a breath.
Chance couldn't help but notice one of the laborer's from the bar had disappeared out the door, and that every security cam in the place was fixed on him. He could feel the Heat radiating off his shoulders -- or was that the pheros?

Same - I thought for a moment, I'd make an appearance at the bar when Chance mentioned curiosity killed the cat ... I've met Curiosity, and made every effort to keep her sedated.
