I have been playing ST for about 2 years now. It is my favorite game and is always waiting patiently for me on my phone. Waiting for the moment when I have a few free minutes to take a contract for the Prince or hunt some pirates for fun. Always faithful, even though I am not always faithful. Yes, I falter and play other games, but in the end I always return to Star Traders. And ST always takes me back. It doesn't chastise me for my failings, but simply asks "Where to, Captain?"
There was a time, not too long ago, when things were starting to become stale. You see, I have created many, many, many Captains only to lose them to the Void. Crushed hull, pirate attack, the dreaded and cursed alien menace. Yes, I lost dozens or maybe hundreds of Captains. It didn't matter what faction or profession I tried. They all ended up the same way - dead. "What was I doing wrong? Was my understanding of the game flawed?", I asked myself over and over. It was then that I discovered the forum and it was there that I found the answers I was seeking.
My ideas of how to play ST were indeed wrong and the Truths were patiently revealed by the residents of the forum. It was here where the insights and ideas posted in the forum were very helpful. I learned that:
You can't be friends with everyone. So don't try.
You can't always run from a fight, and you shouldn't always attack.
You can't be a successful Independant.
You must choose the right profession to suit your playing style.
And you absolutely must MUST belong to the right faction.
Still two questions haunted me.
"What profession would be best?", I pondered.
It was about this time that I discovered (unlocked) the Zealot. What better profession for a Captain? You don't have to worry about people hating you since you only care about your own faction. This makes the negative rep from trade embargoes meaningless really (Something i suffered from routinely). You can hunt freely, destroying every ship that crosses you - all for the glory of your faction. Again who cares about other factions? Their presence in the universe is irrelevant to the greater good that is your faction.
But the question remained, "What faction to serve?" It was in the area of factions that the insightful mewlings of one small kitten were most helpful. Especially those regarding that most hated of factions: the Steel Song Clan.
Then it hit me. Of course... the Steel Song Clan. What better faction for a Zealot Captain? A Captain hated and feared by every other faction, belonging to a faction hated by every other Captain?
So now I have a Captain, the only Captain, that I have managed to keep alive. And I owe it all to you, fellow forumites. So, if we ever cross paths in the depths of space, know that I will offer you a silent salute of gratitude, before sending you to the Void for crimes against the Song.
May the last sound you hear, be a Song of Steel.
