The fleet combat scenario or the paddleship? I reckon that the paddles are actually a top secret new propulsion system developed for faster travel through the distance-gravy and awesome-sauce commonly found in the ST quadrant. Or a new multi-barrelled rotary torp launcher...

In my vision for "Fleet Battle Mode" you don't have to control planets at all.
You have some type of hyperwarp gate or super carrier that brings out your ships.
You probably start with a fixed tech -- so their could be low tech battles or high tech ones.

Cory Trese Exactly. No colonies. Only a deep space cage match beat down.

Maybe before you start the game you can spend some money on research? Ie maybe a high tech vs low tech but low tech has numerical superiority
Also, if this is added to the roadmap, could we have hot seat multiplayer functionality to go with it?

Cory Trese, fallen I was just thinking a really cool scenario for this would be that you "the commander/admiral/whatever)" Have to meet and defeat a Narvidian Armada before it can reach the colonies. that would be your lore base for why the battle is happening in deepsapace or maybe at an asteroid feild instead of in a colony gravity well.

I like it, CdrPlatypus. Having not to worry about colony issues really would make for such an awesome addition. This also really opens the door for some really fun game modes... What about a protection style game mode, where a few colony hives set down on a remote sector (similar to the normal game mode) but with very few systems. You assemble your fleet and defend the new colonies for a set number of turns against wave after wave of Xeno. Colonies would be completely autonomous and handle themselves without your direct control. Eventually they could start aiding your war effort with ships of their own. Once the turn count is achieved, the colonies would be able to handle their own defenses and your mission would be complete. I guess it's similar to CdrPlatypus's but not so much an intercept mission as an area defense.

Even if leaderboards weren't implemented, and you just had some sort of medal system to work towards (Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) for each scenario, that would be awesome. You know how in games like Tropico, Omerta or Townsmen, or even Worms and Kingdom of Wesnoth, you have various challenges to overcome with each unlocking a subsequent one. That would be really cool! "Finally made Platinum on 'The Last Cadar'! 88 turns, no combat losses!" *drool*

I wonder if there could even be true Flagship capabilities for this... Maybe even one that would take up more than one space (not sure if this is within the limitations...) Anyway- lose the flagship, lose the mission. This could be a ton of fun, as you would need to split your forces between offense and (flagship) defense. Enemies could have their own flagship that if you take it out, they lose the battle.
Even MORE fun, super scale battles with flagships where the only way to win is to eliminate the other's flagship. This could lead to diversionary tactics, pincer maneuvers, much like old military battles, where clever tactics and troop movements were absolutely vital to success.
King of the Hill battles, where there are one or more critical areas on the map that need to be held for a cumulative amount of time. First to 100/250/500/1000 points would be the winner. Trophies could be awarded for the magnitude of the win, perfect games where the enemy scores less than say 10% of the total score...

Perhaps you could choose between ship and colony tech, so the better your ships are, the longer the colonies will take to start helping. Of course, this may have to fiddled with to prevent people just getting a longer game with better ships.
