I would really like a couple of maps that are direct fleet combat scenarios. No colonies just a beat down. I like the combat in the game, but not how long it takes to get there sometimes I just want to open up a can o whoop ass on some xenos
So have an amt of resources to design and deploy a fleet to a map and zap in a Zeno fleet
This BTW is something I would gladly purchase as an IAP

This is something I've been thinking about a lot myself. The way I can see it working is that the level determines a technology level, the Xeno AI and your starting credits.
You would be able to purchase canned ships, or use the ship designer to make new designs and deploy a fleet.
So something like 2v1, starting with 120,000 credits and Level 9 Fleet Technology. Different objectives could define certain levels -- like destroy the entire Xeno fleet, protect your flagship for X turns, etc.

Anyone else like this idea?

I do it sounds cool. It would be a fun way to test out new AI or types of aliens too.

This would be a fantastic change up! Honestly I haven't played this game in months, mostly because I get impatient with the pace of the game. To get to the point in the game where you finally get to whoop some Xeno equivalent of ass, you need several hundred turns, deal with bickering factions, hope each of your planets gets both a good set of rolls and an even/steady population growth.
To be able to skip all that and jump straight to tactical combat would bring an entire new game element to ST4X, and would really bring me back to playing it on a more regular basis.
Maybe have 2-4 planets to bring in an income, no faction politics whatsoever. Pick your factions, have a base technology level, start off with 20 or so ships of all different classifications, or even pick which load out of ships you could take. - one such setup could be a recon/light assault force: 2 Scout Class vessels, 4 Fighter Class, 3 Boarding ships. 2 Refuel Carriers, 1 Repair Carrier. Tech could be focused on fast reactors and light weapons.
-Heavy Assault Division: 4 Railgun Cruisers, 3 Torpedo Cruisers. 3 Fighters equipped with heavier weapons and high armour class. 2 Battlecruisers, 2 Heavy Carriers. Tech focus on Superscale weapons, high armour, planets have high refuel/repair rates.
I'm sure there are many other sets of starting forces/tech arrangements, and the starting force could be much much more numerous, this is just my first thoughts on it. Another alternate to giving pre-made battlegroups would be to give them starting credits like you had mentioned, so that we could hand pick our groups. We could also start out with either a pre-made tech level, or we can be given a number of points to be spent only on which technology we want. Take out all the political, treaty, and all other non-combat tech and streamline the tech tree for combat only.
I'm really excited about the idea of this, and I would gladly shell out money for an IAP containing this!

Or instead of unlocking tech individually, put them into groups that you need to unlock via kill count, score, or purchase with credits.
One cool way to do this would be signing a credit value for ships destroyed. This credit can be spent on planet upgrades, ship tech upgrades, ship ability upgrades, planetary tech upgrades, etc. This makes the player strike a balance between upgrading, buying new ships, and buying upgrades for the systems.
You could really reinvent the way the game plays with maps and game modes like this. I see this almost being like an arcade version of the game, but with just as much depth- just a different kind of depth.

Definitely a +1 for this! It is what attracted me to 4X in the first place, afterall... That is, unless ST:BattleFleet is finally on its way... Lol, what I am really looking for is a computerised version of Attack Vector Tactical. I don't know of any of you guys (and girls) have played, but to me it just looks awesome-sauce.

A specific scenario version would be cool, but wouldn't that essentially be TA with research? More importantly, would people misconstrue it as necessary to the game/the rest of the game being "Grindy" unless you pay to skip the "boring parts"?
I don't share that opinion and I know that these extra scenarios would be radically different, mind you. But I've noticed that mobile gets a bad rap on even good games because of two things: People who see IAP and assume the worst, and People who don't bother to learn anything about the games they're playing (more than a few rogue-likes getting "Dying resets progress and I perma-lose character. 1 star as I hate this." I get not wanting to restart a long game and I'm not mortally opposed to maybe restarting a few floors back, but really, do people even look at summaries and reviews anymore? Its a rogue-like for crying out loud, look it up!!!).

Plus you could have a level where you play as Templars as they try to cover the colony hives when they make the jump for the Farfallen Breach.

OG I just see it as a different game type altogether, not skipping anything because they would need to be totally different.
I feel like if they marketed it as an entire new mode of playing and didn't mention skipping the grind, it would be taken really well. Honestly I think this would fill a significant gap in the game as a whole for me. Like I said - the only reason I stopped playing is because of the grind; to be able to skip all that would only add to the game, not take anything away...

Hey, I understand you Enigma. It would be an awesome mode. I'm just playing Devil's Advocate and thinking of how it would be perceived by people who judge without actually reading or asking anything:
"Oh, so to skip the bits I don't like I have to pay?? F--- that, I'm not paying for the only 'story mode' in this game!" (Yes, its not a game that requires an active narrative outside the tutorial, but like I said, these are based on people who I assume wouldn't bother reading or asking anything about this game and assume the worst. ... Yes, this sometimes includes me.)

Interesting. Personally, I enjoy the early game, and stop playing when the Xenos turn up. I'd probably do this if only for combat practise, though.
