My preferred ship for Exploration is a Javat Cutter, or something similar.
You're looking for a fast ship with Hull == Armor *2 and solid Cargo (like Cargo = Sails*3)
FAST is pretty critical here, and will drive up the price.
It will help you in much needed escapes and landings, but will drive up your fuel consumption.
Since you probably won't be fighting much, lower Crew numbers are better.

A fighter class with 4 MP. Load up on the hull. Makes sure you have scan and explore. Some armor and forget weapons. The idea is not fighting, you are going to explore and get out of there if things look ugly. Once you used up the fuel, keep going until it dies or makes it back.

XD For a moment, I thought to myself-- wait, aren't you given one anyway?? Then I reread what section I was in. -_-

I thought having a higher number of crew was better. Yes, you don't use all your crew in any given search (rule of thumb, 20-25 crew per excursion), but having lots of the ole Red-shirted crew members makes it easier to spend more time on a planet before having to restock in crew

I can see the argument for large Crew ships with Exploration, but I'd rather have an efficient ship and make smart choices about where and when I explore so to reduce Crew loss.

Overheard from one spacer who had survived the surface-side Xeno encounters ... "When they first heard about this thing, it was "crew expendable". The next time they sent in marines - they were expendable too. What makes you think they're gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space? You really think they're gonna let you interfere with their plans for this thing? They think we're - we're crud. And they don't give a crap about one friend of yours that's - that's died. Not one." As with all red-shirted Ensigns, you can always find more. Now if you can cryo-tube the majority of your crew during operations, that'd be a real bonus. Yes you'd lose a turn defrosting them, but it'd be worth it. Oh oh oh ... and if you're on an overly hot planet, you can just bring out crew-blocks from storage, and set them up around the ship. As they defrost, they provide natural cooling. See, cats understand the laws of Thermaldynamics

For me somehow ships with higher crew proved bad, because even with intimidate skill 8 I had so many deaths (even when I sent 25 out of 60, most likely most died (often about 90% of the people died on a planet with danger level 6 and found nothing - difficulty lv hard, explorer lv 12) that I just switched back to Aperio Calliga. Somehow with only 25 max crew the searching was way more efficent and most usual number of deaths was 7 (but not that often)

I think the quality of your crew also plays a part. Veteran crew members that have been with you a long time since you hired them from their home world are better than fresh conscripts that still hate you for blowing up their ship.

I basically never enslave, I am able to leave myself understaffed for a short while, but I just don't enslave. And if I managed to get to a fight with some pirate or so, I would have been already understaffed from exploring, so probably would have to just surrender. But it seems the exploring is a little sluggish, because my brother had 35 explorer, 40 crew, but they died pretty easily on a planet with danger of 8 without finding too much. Btw. How can we do that achievment of exploring a planet with 21 danger? Never noticed the danger level raising, even after the Dark century.

One of the De valtos planets in the bottom right has danger 25
