If you have a bit of wisdom to share in two sentences or less, do so in this thread!
To begin: Think twice about exploring a dangerous planet unless your Captain is built for it.

Don't fall into the trap of using all your crew in a single exploration action. 20 - 25 crew at a time is usually more than sufficient to be successful.
Pilot helps you change ranges in combat - but Stealth is crucial if you don't want to be hit by enemy weapons fire.
If you use Auto Pilot, it is still important to pay attention. Sail damage or radiation storms could be enough to make you run out of fuel before arriving at your destination.
Watch the color of any encounter. If it's white, you can safely ignore, but if it's red, it means the enemy will definitely chase after you! In that case, it may actually pay for you to shoot first even if your intention is to retreat.
Take advantage of shortage rumors - they are the lowest-risk ways of making money quickly.
Always keep abreast of faction conflicts if you want to avoid accidental reputation loss.
Attacking flagged pirates won't cost you reputation points with that faction - so long as you don't destroy them or enslave them. However, you'll definitely lose reputation with any allied faction.

When you're sliding down the 40 foot razor-blade of life, try not to use your balls as brakes.

Hrmmm.
I'm an Andy, and a gamer.
As all of my gaming tables will attest, your rule does not apply to THIS Andrew. In fact they'd probably assert that if it's a Saving Throw you should probably bet against me. No one, at any of my tables, has ever failed as many saves in a row as I have.

Consider surrender rather than fight and die on your younger days, just remember who they are and who they work for. It's gonna be a sweet centennial reunion, them as your celebratory fireworks.
You can't please everybody all the time.
