As I'm playing my current captain as an explorer, it's very important to gather rumors as I travel around to gather more crew to send out into the harshest climates in the quadrant and almost certain death. To this end, whenever I get to a new urban zone, I first head to the spice hall to recruit and catch up on the latest rumors. I read rumors until the button grays out. Then I head to the Palace to hear the rumors there. Invariably, when I return to the spice hall, there are more rumors awaiting me. I welcome the extra rumors, but this behavior seems unintentional to me. Also, I wish there was a button to hear all the rumors at once, as I feel like a hamster hammering the next rumor button until it grays out...but that is a post for the wish list forum.

that does make sense.
there will be an Ship Officer (Political Officer, Intelligence Officer) that allows the "all rumors for $100" type option.
sorry for the button hammering interface, I am trying to get those out. we have fixed ship upgrades, ship purchases. rumors will probably be next -- although check back in the rumors list for some new fun things in the next release.

Could types of rumors be tied into your captain's stats? Say if your captain has a high explorer rating he could get more exploration rumors while a high negotiate rating could get hear about better bargains. Having a high intimidate rating might land you whatever type of rumor you want. (Captain barges into the Spice Hall yelling, "You with the squinty eye! Tell me where I can get the best prices on Vudka or your parrot gets it!")

it is stat based today but not very sophisticated.

I'm excited about the new rumor features -- cool stuff. I got to thinking the other day, and wondered something -- do events happen whether or not the captain checks for rumors? It almost seems like if rumors are never checked, the quadrant is a very quiet place. Perhaps things are going on, but the captain just doesn't know about them? Brings to mind the old paradox about the tree falling in the forest with no one to observe...

the rumors continue to run regardless of the Captain's involvement with them.
Early in the game's development the Captain didn't even learn about rumors when he landed -- just prices, problems and closures were the hints.
People said that was too hard so at least now as soon as Captain lands he gets all the rumors for that Sector.
Radiation storms are a great example -- they take 1-3 Health and 20-50% of the Crew for entering the Sector. They're always out there even if the Captain isn't keeping track of them.
