This may have been asked before, but I've got a group that was headed toward the temple of the arachnid level. I was one level away and there was a red locked door that I couldn't find the lever for ( I forget which dungeon I was on). Playing on my phone and these maps are so huge!
Thought I remembered something about the path upward being behind a lock so you couldn't accidentally get trapped. Found a staircase but it sent me up to underforge pits. Now I can't go back down to keep moving forward.
Here's my question: am I stuck moving forward towards Smith's horde using the other path down or can I find another up staircase to go back down through the already cleared levels?

@rearick - there are a number of ways to pass through the Underforge, you are not forced down a single path. Finding alternate routes definitely requires backtracking though.
Why can't you go back down?

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that. After I went up from Great Forges (just looked it up) to Underforge pits, my heroes were standing on a 9x9 brick tileset instead of a staircase that would take me back down to where I wanted to be. I'm playing on the latest version. Wasn't sure if that was a bug or feature.

Have you looked at the map? startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/7137/episode-2-route-mapIt might help you. There are no doors that lock behind you, so you should always be able to go back the way you came in. There is only one door, that you wouldn't be able to find a lever for and that is in the Temple of the Arachnid itself. It depends on which map you entered it from and it only leads to another stairwell that would let you go up to the Great Forges. Edit: Actually I should have looked at the map more closely I mixed up UF Pits and Great Forges.

I'm 90% sure that's a feature designed to make room for the cutscene if people come up into the Pits from the Great Forges, before they cleared it out. I know because I did that once and it's not fun at all.

contributor - odd, still want to look into it. It's very strange to have reports of a disappearing staircase.

Yeah, I stepped right up into a battle and only after beating back some spiders looked around to figure out where I was.

it's not that the staircase disappears. It's that your party gets placed a good number of squares to the south of it because it triggers a scripted scene. So it can sort of disorienting.

Success! contributor once again proves his mastery of the game. I was indeed exactly seven squares south of the staircase down to Great Forges and one square south of the trigger for the cutscene of seeing one of the spawning spiders for the "first time." Now I just need to spend some quality time on Great Forges double checking that I flipped all the switches.
