Riven Field questions (a1e2 minor spoilers)

So, I'm on my 2nd play through and just got to Riven Field. Is there anything you can actually do here with the Reeve/Knight, the merc company, or the Family compound, or are those all just local flavor? I thought you had a choice after your night in the inn, but Balgair whisked me straight off to Barnett after the guards said the reeve was back.

sbodd - that section of the story is linear and drives you toward the siege. In later episodes, you can meet the leader of Vladin's hand, speak with the Reeve, do a subquest on her behalf, etc.
