Forgive me if this has been asked before... why does the big yen symbol in the upper left change between green and yellow depending on where I'm at? What are the game effects of each color?

There are several things it can tell you. for more information, tap the symbol.
it will display green, yellow, orange or red.
+ Followed
+ Low Ammo
+ Followed + Low Ammo
+ Clean / Plenty of Ammo

speaking of the Yen symbol, I noticed that the recent builds are showing a dot not the yen unicode character.
looks like the mac book i have been doing my builds on (during travel) is not generating the correct symbol sets.
next release should fix that.
