I'm changing the title of this thread to "Is Grapple too awesome?" since it's only 1AP. There's always the risk of counter attack, but some Strength/Warrior points help. I've put some points into Soldiers & Engineers to use grapple. My Engineer took out a Goliath (206hp) and finished off a Hunter all in one turn. When defending a TP, my Soldier will move up to a Xeno and take it out with Grapple, then go into Overwatch -- it's a great combo. Damage per action point of my current squad:
| Ranged | Melee | Captain | 28 | 31 | Engineer | 24 | 47 | Soldier | 24 | 50 | Scout | 31 | 25 | Berserk | | 35 |
Of course, this table ignore crits and probability to hit and talents that allow hitting multiple Xenos, but my grapple seems to hit almost every time.

My engineers make heavy use of Grapple. They always seem to be in the sh*t, so it's nice to have a high accuracy/penetration/damage attack that ALSO buffs their defense. Everything an Engineer could ever dream of.

I do love how the posts have gone from "omg Grapple is suicide I can never use it" and now to this We'll keep an eye on this one. Next release includes lots of big re-balances, so I think we'll have to evaluate after that. We love the game to have lots of options, so this is not a bad thing, but we will watch for it to be too OP. Also, I think the table that you provided lacks enough detail to be meaningful. Are you investing Skill, Attribute, and Talent points in Grapple instead of BF? If so, of course the damage is skewed. Providing those details would make the analysis more insightful.

I do love how the posts have gone from "omg Grapple is suicide I can never use it" and now to this I was frustrated before because without any strength/warrior points I couldn't hit anything and the counterattack was pretty rough. Other new players may experience something similar. It's not always clear how a point of strength corresponds to increased damage / probability to hit. Maybe the calculations are too complicated, but it would be nice to evaluate the trade off when investing skill points. For example, the following would be customized to each Templar at their level up screen: Increasing strength will improve melee damage from 30-40 to 33-43, probability to hit will increase from 70 to 74%, etc.

We will work on publishing data to help it be super clear to everyone who's struggling with the numbers!
Strength doesn't increase damage at all, however. =)
Grapple never goes AoE and engages counter-chains. Soldiers also don't defensive counter like a Berserk.
Having a solid "1 AP" strategy is good, but consider buffing, grenades and resupply as superior to Grapple.

For example, the following would be customized to each Templar at their level up screen: Increasing strength will improve melee damage from 30-40 to 33-43, probability to hit will increase from 70 to 74%, etc. The calculations are pretty simple and will be included in-game shortly. As Cory Trese mentioned, Strength does not increase damage, only Accuracy. Your Talent points and the weapons you choose are going to drive your damage, so if you are investing your Talent points and Gear Levels in Grapple over Burst Fire, then that table makes sense.
