When Ratkin (or anyone else for that matter) build tunnels or excavate areas where do they put the rock? Since they're underground in tunnels already there isn't much space to dump the rocks without filling in other tunnels.

There's so many holes after Shattering… Also, I don't think Ratkin dig anything. They are scavengers, not builders.

The majority of the UD is existing, I'm sure. A few conversations can be found in the game where the characters are discussing the underground structures and relics. If the Ratkin needed to dig, I'm sure there are no shortages of fissures, deep holes, and empty space in the caverns to dump the soil/rock.
There was evidence of the Ratkin digging up to the foundations of Oskahold, and again, judging by the terrain, many dead ends and areas could be found to set the excavation waste aside.

The Ratkin eat their excavations. It's good roughage, helps keep Ratkin bellies full (less complaining), and keeps them angry enough that when four innocent explorers come across them, they launch into an attack straight away.

Yes it was the Oskahold digging that made me wonder. The origin of underdeep is partially explained in an ep3 subquest. But yeah, I wondered about if they just filled other tunnels in to place the dirt from New tunnels. Just curious... The surface is a long way off. The 4 talk about excavation site but never mention fill-dirt dumped anywhere... Perhaps it's just not important for them to mention.

Even the excavations under Red Hill (done by slave labor) needed to dispose of the spoils.
One would guess that things like the chasm where the bridge incident occurred would slowly be filled up with the waste material. It'd be a win-win as you'd have a place to get rid of the spoils, AND you'd finally remove the need to have a bridge.

Those cracks may never be filled completely...
Remember the entire surface ruptured during the Shattering, I'm sure some of these fissures go through the entirety of the planet's crust.
Some of these fissures were so wide that oceans drained out...

Then that answers the question of where the spoils go

I spend a lot of time within the lore of HoS in any given day... Like a lot of time...
I wonder how many people died in some of those regions (like on the way to the Brayeshaulm Lodges) where it is so fractured and dangerous that bridge after bridge must be built...

I wondered if there were aftershocks - and if the bridges met building standards. They just don't make bridges like they used to

This is one of those answers that only leads to more questions. Biology dictates that what goes in, must come out.

Given the building materials... Hard to say how sound the bridges are. Some moreso than others, I don't think those by the Lodges were too well maintained, given their location and the evidence of Orcin attack. Those in the UF, though... Vurnak I'm sure would have far sturdier structures in his realm. I bet those between the Kraiv Fastness and Oskahold were decent, it seemed they had sturdier logs for the construction.

I don't think _iron_wood named as such for no reason…

This is one of those answers that only leads to more questions. Biology dictates that what goes in, must come out. They might have internal organs that turn the rocks into gaseous compounds. Those gasses escape the rays rear (they're always surrounded by stench in game) and the gases perculoate out of the underdeep to the surface where they call as gravel rain.

So what you're saying bobsoup is that sandstorms are giant clouds of rat poop.
