A discussion came up on the Boarding Training thread, about the long term effectiveness of boarders.
Issue at Hand: When used for their purpose, boarding ships always attack first, so they rarely get kills/exp. This lack of exp means that they are quickly outpaced by xeno level, and lose their effectiveness.
Possible Solutions: My thought was that boarding ships could be given exp gains similar to invasion ships, where exp is gained for a successful attack instead of a kill. #en1gma had the idea that boarders should get exp any time a xeno ship under their debuff is destroyed.
Would either of these changes be possible, or perhaps something is already in the works?

Rotate them into kill duty early, and spend more credits on them to add Upgrades to maximize their long term impact.

When the Xeno are sending massive hoards, use Boarding ships first to be most efficient. When you're mopping up or dealing with just a few Xeno ships, let the Boarding ships get the kill.

Yah, that's pretty much what I do. If you build them heavy, you can also use them to soak fire behind the lines and get kills vs. Missile ships.
