Okay, I can't believe I didn't think of this before now. In fact I'm feeling quite foolish. But just in case someone else hasn't considered this also, I thought I'd post it.
Perfecting Piracy: Prior Planning emPloying Proper Predator-array Preparatory Procedures Produces a Pinnacle of Piratical Profits
So, let's say your a piratical sort by nature. You need not be an actual "Pirate" sort of captain, bounty hunters and military officers can certainly beat them out in this tactic. But if your late-game strategy involves, "Find some ships, shoot them up, take their stuffs" you can definitely do better with this idea.
The problem I found with late-game piracy is in finding targets. You can blockade worlds. You can surveil them. You can even "Patrol" and hope for targets. Heck, you can even chase deep-space rumors in search of targets. In all of these cases I find a lamentable lack of targets is my biggest issue. Every turn spent in space costs fuel, and time, and I resent losing any of them.
I have found a solution to my woes. (In ten easy steps, one for each "P", and an escape clause for the "e")
1. Get a predator tracking array. (or be a bounty-hunter or military officer)
2. Take a capture contract, one that warns you not to destroy the ship.
3. Go to your target's sector.
4. Surveil the area until you've acquired target tracking information.
5. Hit That Target!
6. Loot That Target!
7. Destroy That Target! (unless your contract is almost out of time, in which case just complete it)
8. Go, "Oh Noes! I've destroyed my target, what shall I do, I've failed my contract?"
9. Laugh as your XO tells you "We have target tracking information, we can still acquire the target."
10. Go to step 4. Rinse. Repeat.
Whenever your cargo hold runs out of space sell your goods on-planet, or cache them in between rinse-cycles.
The point of this is that I can guarantee a fight pretty much every other turn. (and more fighting means more XP and more goods to sell)
Have fun folks, and remember, be safe out there, the sector's going to Hell in a handbasket as fast as my warp-drives can take it there.
