I have a way I build my paladins that, so far, I really like. I focus almost exclusively on Healing and Warding Fire at first, but I put her skills into warrior and tactics (around 6 is good for tacts). Her attributes are mostly Strength with a little constitution. Only once I've got those where I want them, do I start applying offensive or defensive talents. I've tried at least one of each and I like them both. I think the defensive one was my favorite. She had such high auto-block and parry that she could just hang on the front lines soak all the attacks while the shooters killed everything around her.
I guess the only problem is that my ideal build might not be somebody else's. Others might want the parry/accuracy of inspiration for their squad, or they might just need a frontline slasher most. I would say that since Inspiration is basically the same thing as Commander's Confidence it's not likely to be something a lot of people are going to want, and in general if most of her talents are going into group buffs she should be putting more points into tactics. I would never start raising her medic skill before I got her to where she could buff the whole group. I actually don't raise the medic skill at all. Again, others may have a different pattern for their Paladins though so it's hard to try and pick the ideal build for everybody.
