Caching against Elite map is one of the most fun ways to play the game, IMO

Will start doing that now that I have 100k to live on. Might bump my cargo some , haven't decidided. Now, obviosly the safety of the cache is rated, but I had one that was rated as a 4 and never got it found. Is it the treasure hunters rumor I need to watch for? Treasure Hunter ... good idea for a class in ST2 imo.

Fourth HorsemanAt the very least, cache water fuel in a few strategic locations. This means you don't have to worry about trade embargoes when you are running low. You don't necessarily need to actually BUY stuff for your cache. Yes, buy under surplus situations (you can always get a ton of things for very little cash). However the bulk of your stuff for caches inevitably comes from ship to ship encounters. There are some very high-traffic shipping lanes that you can milk for lots of potential targets. It will cause lots of -ve RP with some factions though depending on the areas you are patrolling. negative RP does mean more encounters with that faction though - especially when they start sending lots of bounty hunters an military ships at you. You're picking the fight though, so I'd expect you to be able to handle yourself

With my pirate I do that. I'll cache whatever I loot. I'm playing a merchant, non combat class.

Above all else, the Merchant should be looking for Surplus Rumors.
To trade profitably the Merchant watches average prices, checking the commodity price list for nearby worlds and watching for Shortages.

Yeah, I have realized some routes , other than spice, that I can run. I need to up my cargo space and maybe buy the upgrade that gives me a bonus that let's me move undetected. Since I have trade permits with 5 of the factions, I just picked up 40 electronics on surplus. Threw then into a cache. Stealth, pilot, and more negotiation are needed.

Starting over I'm just doing a few missions to get experience going. I'm doing a Cadar merchant and will focus again on pacifist non exploring. I'm going to focus on pilot, stealth, negotiation. Keep to the med/med ships to save fuel economy and low crew. Good?

Ok here is my issue with merchant. I might be doing it wrong as well. Being I'm not combat oriented, it's very hard to get xp. If I drop too much in stealth, I cut that back even more. I dropped points into explore for something to do while I wait out some trade embargoes and spy wars. Otherwise I could have a permit with all factions. Should I just go around trading looking for surplus/shortage or run missions for exp?

Should I just go around trading looking for surplus/shortage or run missions for exp? The only enemies that matter are Indies and aliens once you have trade permits with everyone. If you meet aliens, perhaps it is an insta-death. The chances of meeting one are very low though. That is the reason why I love Aperio Caliga as a merchant ship. It has reasonable stats and fast speed, making escaping more efficent and therefore reducing the need of exp. I don't do too much of missions, but I have only a free version. Another note: I don't know the elite map, but for free version 25 negotiation and low pilot was enough. It allowed me to include indies in my trade routes. When I have time, I will create a summary for merchants concerning north-west quadrant. As for surpluses, basically surpluses are rather a way of making money, but shortages are better. The best ones are weapon shortages. But I would seek shortages only to gain money. For purposes of gaining reputation (180 with everybody and then buying rank 18 everywhere to be protected from trade embargoes) you may even want to do Buy->sell to gain rep.

Ok, I am getting frustrated. I want to play a bloody boots type. I have been trying to use the BH. Can I get some advice on how to build him? I have been trying to just run missions , but fall in rep with too many factions and costing me tons of money. Frustrated , need advice.

Thanks for the posts. I have the skill set correct. Think I'm just allocating it wrong and need to buy pardons before they get to costly. I started a new Cadar BH and , although you and Cory may argue this , I find that the syndicates better for BH and a better path through reds , barring the random trade embargo. Few questions: I might be mistaken , but it seems Solar War no longer gives -rep in exchange. True? What all does the warrant do? I know jobs are randomized a bit, but are there better chances for a capture/kill from the palace/base/hall and does a certain faction give them out more?

I know jobs are randomized a bit, but are there better chances for a capture/kill from the palace/base/hall and does a certain faction give them out more? Steel Song lives to fork out Assassination missions and De Valtos just spits out lots of contracts period. Warrants give more money and better contracts for kill/capture missions if I recall correctly. Best bet for those kinds of missions seems to be palace. Just remember, the BH specialty isn't screwing around many ships, but hunting down the quick ones and stalking them. Basically, your money will come from capture/kills, not blockade/surveillance/pirating. I also suggest not doing many of the hunt contracts at once. There's always the chance of a freakishly powerful merchant putting your ship at the brink, and the last thing you need pulling out of some Indy hell hole is a horde of angry faction ships from some petty lord out to kill you over it.

I don't play nicely with song birds lol. I'll hit up Da Walmart and and Rychart. My thought this time is to befriend the syndicates. The houses will be kept around neutral. Do the hit on the house, buy the pardon after. I'm trying to play him as a BH so my tactics will only be high enough to keep a few torps on target, stealth just to avoid torps and high level encounters. Pilot and warrior are crucial to me. So far so good , but my BH is still a baby. Only dropped into pilot up to 13 right now.
