If a pirate loots any W/F, it isn't much. I typically start my combat class out with the the one with the smuggler hold because of the 2* Eng/Sail. I have never looked in my cargo itself but the few times I looked on the map screen it didn't seem to change.
Either way, thank you for your advice on the merchant class. After my "honey do" list I will reroll one. *sigh* I accidentally deleted one that had permits with every faction *DOH*

As I am not an Elite member, I don't know anything about the ship with Smuggler's hold. But somehow it let's me wonder why people choose this ship. 97% of contracts get protected from exposure, but exposing a contract doesn't equal to failing it. There is no reputation loss with any class when they find a suspicious Thulun porn magazine or a family of Steel song refugees who are trying to find better living conditions in another world. Sure, these things get confiscated and the people are executed, but still, as merchant does quests only to get trade permits, this upgrade will sooner or later become a bother. Just my note, I have no experience with elite

Smuggler's Hold is an upgrade that can be replaced by a different propulsion upgrade, so it's no issue.

I don't use it because of the smuggler hold. I use it because of the 2x sail and engine. Helps having that to run. The only other upgrade I normally do is the W/F tank on the starting vessel.

Does a pacifist merchant have to have pilot skill as high as my standard privateer or should I put more into stealth. I'm thinking to have pilot a bit lower , but stealth higher. Thoughts?
Don't laugh at me!! I normally play a privateer (pirate).

I would keep pilot at 1.5 times my level, and stealth is at least equal to my level. I don't know if it is the best way to build, but it seems to work fine enough at impossible as long as my ship is fast enough.

Don't laugh at me!! I normally play a privateer (pirate). I'm really a smuggler rather than a merchant, meaning I piss off 2-3 factions at a time for shits and giggles, so my first instinct is to say yes and have solid Tactics too so you can blow overeager hunters out of the any. I prefer to simply run, but if a torp hits my sails and ruins that option I'd like to make that the last terrible decision some snot ever made.

I wouldn't raise tactics past 16 as a merchant. I've been playing a smuggler recently, and despite having less than -100 rep with all houses and clans, I don't even have a wanted flag because I've avoided "finishing" ship battles. Torp first turn then flee Edit: also the Rychart Templar is good ship for a merchant, and even better for a smuggler!

I go back in forth between smuggler and merchant class for a non combative. Gun bunny I prefer for combat, but am able to play bloody boots. My current Merchant met his end by an Indy pirate because I was carrying weapons from a shortage. Maybe I'll try a smuggler again.

Lipstick lesbian, Batman!! You're right. Rychart Templar is a fantastic ship. I have never noticed it before. I'm thinking about trading in my starting ship for it. I can't do any serious trading right now as 5 of the factions are in an embargo. It's not a bad ship even for pirates .
