So im a very new player to this game so forgive me if this seems obvious. I'm playing as a smuggler and the game mentions contraband a few times. I was wondering what exactly is classed as contraband? Do you buy it at certain ports or are some items simply illegal in one place rather than another?

Weapons, Electronics and Artifacts are illegal contraband cargo by any Faction with whom you do not have a Trade Permit.
Independent Star Traders do not honor, nor require, Trade Permits. They will buy and sell Contraband to or from any Star Trader regardless of reputation.

Thank you Cory Trese. I have recently downloaded star trader so will keep this in mind but I was asking in regards to age of pirates  |

Contraband would include Gold, enemy factions consider Shot and Powder contraband, and I believe Spices are as well...
