I was thinking it could be interesting if, upon being offered a "Transport" or "Trade" contract, the player had the option to "Accept with Assistance". This would be a special option unique to those contracts, which would provide the captain with either some or all of the trade goods to complete the contract, or some extra credits to help the player acquire the goods. Accepting assistance would have the drawbacks of getting less payment and reputation for completion, and an extra large reputation loss for failing or cancelling the contract.

I really love the Trade Contract system in ST! Yeah, the best one is when they ask you to trade 61 weapons to a planet belonging to a race they trade embargoed several years ago  |

Trade contracts? Are you talking about ST2? No, I meant the contracts that are fulfilled by selling X amount of Y at the target exchange. I think you need a trade permit with the faction you're doing jobs for to get this type of contract. |

I've bought hundreds of Trade Permits, and taken thousands of contracts, but I've never seen one of those, before. Are they super rare, or something? |

Once they asked me to trade some minerals, but no nearby planets had any  but as long as there are no nasty trade embargoes, these quests are a nice way to earn some cash, usually the return rate is around 30 thousands bucks |
