Hi guys, (by the way Mr. Cory, your games Rock!) never posted b4, however I'm almost addicted to this game! Started with Star Traders, &got a notification abt AOP. Since I'm a Service Connected Disabled Vet ( NAVY!!!!) no WAY could I pass this game up, y'know? Anyways, still new 2 AOP, & when I hear Rumors abt shortages of items of course I try to get there. WHERE CAN I FIND SILK? I check my (very helpful,by the way, thanx mr programmer whoever u r) info panel that shows me prices of particular items & where they are sold/bought, Yet I have yet to find ANY Port that has more than 2 units of silk. Most times I go to said destination, & yes, while they ARE buying/selling said product, usually the have absolutely NONE in stock!!!!! I wind up missing the opportunity of the shortage, 'cause I can't find any!!!! Please, ANY help would be greatly appreciated. (p.s. , almost the same thing w/gold, but at least u hav a good chance to buy some if u go 2 a mining town). Thank you and again, for the bosses, u guys Rock & keep the games coming!!!(please)

winchell780 Welcome to the forum!!! Sorry it took so long to get a response, and while I don't have all the answers, I can give at least some help before Cory Trese or fallen can come in and fill you in on all the details. Each port will have different things in stock depending on the type of the port. Population (and Major Population) Centers will be looking for things like Silks, Spices, Gold, Maps, and Journals. They will be selling things such as Rations, Rum, and items that the population has too much of, like Canvas. Agricultural Centers have raw ingredients for sale, like Timber, Hemp, Molasses. They aren't the best places for selling items, but things like Rum can be in demand. Naval Forts are awful places to buy anything. Their prices will almost always be higher than anywhere else, but they almost always have what you need in stock, albeit for a real cost. Only buy what you need to get you somewhere else at these ports. Shot and Powder is typically in abundance here. They will buy Rum, Canvas, Timber, and are the only place other than Population Centers that will purchase Gold from your Captain, as they have the capability to properly defend it. Backwater Ports are Awful places to buy anything from. They will buy and sell the essentials, but at a huge mark-up. Like Naval Forts, they are last-resort purchase locations. I'm sure there are a ton of nuances I'm missing, but as far as I know this should be mostly right. I'll leave it to the TB to extrapolate further. Good luck, and welcome again!!

Hey En1gma, thank you for responding so quickly. I've read through the tips thread, (I believe you put a post there about types of ports, ect. Very helpful. I guess my main problem is .... where can I buy Silk? I've NEVER been able to play any Pirate, Warrior, ect in TreeseBrother's Universe, whether it is Star Traders Elite or Age of Pirates. It always leads me to a swift and (rather pitiful and/or humiliating) death. As in, with a quickness! I really like Cory's games, but y'know, if the only character that I can play for more than 7 minutes without dying is a merchant, it's really quite frustrating to not know where you can find cargo( i.e., SILK!!!). One other thing I was curious about. As I've said, I tend to get my you know what handed to me OFTEN(as in, I die), However, when I start a quote unquote NEW game, the Cities that Ive bought from in previous games do not replenish themselves back to , well what they're supposed to be. Now, even though I've wiped the data by cleaning the cache AND data, AND uninstalled/reinstalled the game, the Cities where I'm at now have NOTHING IN STOCK. I guess I'm missing a LOT of basic ideas about the game, or something. I'll give it another week, but I'm not a masochist. After so much abuse, I leave, & go to the next game. (Service connected disabled veteran, got LOTS of time on my hands.) So hey! En1gma, really appreciate the help so quick, & I'll try some more.

Some items need a surplus to really be viable... I would check the Wealthy/Major Population Centers, as they would likely have them to sell to the population.
Past this, some measure of piracy could be in order- it is Age of Pirates after all! Pick a faction, (if you've read my posts on AoP, you've likely heard of my unnecessary hatred of the Federation of Kaihmer, they're usually my go to targets, but feel free to pick one-- no more than one if you're going for a merchant or peaceful(ish) game...) And target specifically their Merchants. This is the fastest way I've found to find non-contraband items.
I'm glad I was able to help! (Here's a shameless plug for you to check out some stories/fan fiction, if you're interested in them, check out the See the World, They Said thread. Shameless, I know.)
Happy sailing!

Hi, everyone. If I'm understanding this correctly there is only one way to determine if a port has the actual item I want to buy, and that is to go to said port. Is this correct? Is there No way 2 tell whether a port has run out of (example,& my pet peeve right now, Silk?) On the one hand, if true, that stinks. However ( I'm thinking this is the case ) on the other hand, back in 1500 or whatever the only way a Captain COULD find out what a port had was 2 go there! So, o.k. Not happy abt it but hey! I should give the Treese Bros. the Wayne's World 'we're not worthy bow' for making the game as rezlistic as that!
( I never do this stuff, posting, ect; I've found THIS community (don't know abt others) to be helpful ( & guys/gals with a quickness!!! I thought @least a week 4 a response!!!) & MOST importantly to me ( I'm from upstate New York ) respectful of all. YOU FORUM GIVES ME FAITH FOR THE SURVIVAL OF THE HUMAN RACE! (Anytime u thnk the earth is doing ok, turn on the news). So everyone, thanks.

Try long-pressing on a city! You can get all the basic info about the city if I'm not mistaken.

Shoot, a whole week for a response? Try a few hours, or a day at most. I'm on all the time, and I know how much I hate waiting for an answer, so if I can answer, I will as soon as I can. This really is a great community, so feel free to stick around- there aren't any trolls, and everyone genuinely wants to help everyone else.
Have a +1 Karma for yourself (Exalt = Good, Smite = Bad), and if you have any other questions, issues, find any bugs, or just want to talk about the game, go for it. The AoP forum is the quietest of them all, so any discussions here are AWESOME.
Have you tried any of the other TB games yet? Star Traders (otherwise known as ST), is very similar to AoP, but in a sci-fi setting, and might interest you if you really like this one.
Also, if you want to tag someone, put the @ sign right before their name, no space, and you will give them a notification that will bring them to the tag...

AoP is actually the TB game that I enjoy playing merchant in the most. As En1gma pointed out, you can get most basic information regarding a port by long clicking on a city, and generally you can tell what will be in demand just by simply knowing the type of port you are going in. It's been a long time since I started the game up (too much work, too many TB games to play!) but, from memory, it was relatively transparent and easy to understand. I wrote up a guide way back when about trade routes, I'll see if I can't find it and link it for you..

As a practical matter, unless the game has changed since I last played it, you never buy Silk in towns. It's produced in other lands which aren't written yet. So if you want some you have to capture other ships for it. I think it is possible for it to show up as 'rumour surplus' good, but I am not certain of that.

Early days yet, got the story line game on ice and have bumped up to elite & hard with a military career. (Learning the hard way that early on combat targets run away in a blink of a eye). What I've noticed so far.... Silks can be bought in pirate trade hubs and sold in rich pop centres ( profit variety and due to lack of ports dealing probably not efficient choice for a merchant ). In any port if trade good is greyed out then its not possible to trade full stop, if trade good not listed then if u come back with goods on board can sell to them. I find with most tresse games, especially early on its good to take notes, as well as now and again doing some general reading on the boards

Sorry I missed this thread when it first was posted. City economies are not unique -- they are based on a Template system.
If you know the goods sold in a Pirate Trade Hub, you'll find similar goods (and similar price distribution) in other Pirate Trade Hubs. Mastering the routes between them (PTH to Pop Center, for example) you'll be able to be successful in any sea on the map!
