Could someone please tell me how wild zone repair works? Do I need metals and crystals for it? I don't know of any explanation of how it is supposed to work on either the forum or the help file.

I'll double check the help file and make sure the details are clear in there.
You need Metals and Crystals (use Harvest if you are out.)
It can take many turns and put you behind the curve, but it is a way to get your Engines and Sails back up to 50%.
You need the Mechanic officer.
