Well, I tend to run a bit heavy in the losses department since I never restart. That said, I tend to run relatively heavy on bang. I'll give a basic run down of a squad of 6, because that is what is the most common BF size.
1) Captain, of course! Kitted out for massive CQB oomph, try to pump up autoblock as high as I can and put point in Warrior and Strength almost exclusively. Evasion and Fortitude get a bit of a bump once in a while.
2) Leader soldier, focused on buffing and ranged damage. Usually equipped with the best long range leviathan I can give him. Totally focused on Rallying Charge and overwatch.
3) Basher soldier, focused on strength and killing. Usually equipped with beefy armor, gauntlets, and heavy plasma. Most of the points go to Strength and Warrior, occasionally tossing some in Evasion and Gunnery.
4) Hydra, focused purely on Strength and Warrior. Talents get spread around, but Grapple is always in there. Heaviest armor I can get.
6) Scout, usually kitted out for debuffing attacks and crit. Not really used as a scout, more like a behind the lines sniper.
This squad works really well for most levels, and I really love it!

This recently came up in another thread, so I thought I'd post it here.
Here is a very effective Scout build for those levels where you need to do a lot of moving.
Build your scout centered around gunnery and quickness and equip him/her with a biopoison weapon. Talent points should be DUMPED into crippling fire, I like it as high as possible. What you want to do is position your scout behind your main front and have him/her plink xenos that are chasing you with crippling fire. One shot per xeno, nothing to crazy. Continue moving away from the xeno, and watch them all die a couple turns later as they absolutely crawl after you. Such a fun build to use!

I like to have two scouts ready to go. 1 deep op needler/crippling shot and one head shot sniper.

I like my "glass cannon" scout and pray no Xeno gets near her.
My lead soldier likes to buff everyone with extra MP to get moving.
I also like my Soldiers to get some Grapple in before OW.
Some levels, I'll build my Captain and Scout to get to 13MP, then I really need Willpower.

I have never used a ranged build captain, I really should try to do so one day.
My next squad is going to be a "full" melee squad, meaning that, whenever possible, I'll deploy nothing but my captain, a paladin, and berzerkers! That should be a blood filled squad!

That sound like a lot of fun but would take ages to deploy. At 650 a pop you could finish many levels before you got them all out. Starting sp will probably limit your plans as well.
PS to any devs looking for feedback - I don't think berserkers justify the sp increase over Neptunes or hydras. I understand not wanting to spam the map with paladins or engineers but berserkers don't justify their cost to me.

Maybe he could build his soldiers as melee/grenadiers to keep in theme instead of relying on OW
