Is it just me, or is being a pirate on Age of Pirates pointless? On Star Traders you could shoot out the engines and loot the ship, but now you can only board, and no matter what happens I never win, and I take extremely heavy damage, so any little bit of loot I do get, I spend on repairing my ship...

Well, I just start as a pirate, and I'm looking for a merchant, and they always beat me. I never survive long enough to get better cannons.

Zer0Winds - can you give more information? How do you get beat? What tactic are you using? The game is not ST RPG, so you can't just port tactics over directly. I love my pirate captains -- without a doubt, the most fun to play for me. Just sailing the high seas pillaging and plundering, what a life!

Pretty much what Cory said. The trick here is to disable and whittle away the merchants before boarding. Use chasing cannons, fast ships and chain shot to bring down their sails, and if they don't give up then start using grape shot on their crew/decks before boarding. Loot, don't sink them, and get gone before some glory hound finds you.

I try shooting broadside at first, I try getting closer, eventually I get close enough to board, once I do, I try boarding them, and it usually fails, and they either get away, destroy my hull, or defeat me in a duel. And these are merchants I'm talking about. So either I'm just really bad, or I need a new tactic.

Zer0Winds, I can't remember exactly, but just like in ST you want to cripple the enemy ship. You don't necessarily have to board if you wipe out all of their sails or crew, so take pot shots at those! Get in close, and open up with that grapeshot!

It matters WHERE you shoot-- those icons on the left make the difference depnding on gunnery and tactics. In addition, you need special kinds of shots to do the damage you're looking for.

I don't have a choice on where I shoot. Get to medium range first.

How can I cripple the ship in Age of Pirates, since in ST you shoot out the engines, how do you do it in Age of Pirates?
