just did the wolf lord quest for the storm brothers, awesome battle, i took the bridge.
anyhow i let the shamans get outta hand before i knew it i had about 20 of those winter spirits stacked up....
my question is this, why is xp not granted for the spawns? it seemed like earlier in the game i was getting xp for them but i didnt really notice if not till just now. my last 3-4 turns of the battle was just killing the dozen or so left over winter spirits and i didnt get any xp at all from them.
why? they load up as tough as any other mob... they hit just as hard... i use my potions and resources killing them. i guess you could say maybe using them to farm xp? i just dont think its really viable and if someone really wants to farm xp that way... so what.. sounds boring as hell. not like there is a real life currency involved here... maybe i am missing something

riverjack - summoned creatures do not grant XP to avoid farming. It sounds like you'd argue that is not a good enough reason to deny XP for summoned monsters.

i was just surprised, i had never noticed that they didnt drop xp before. its a single player game.. not understanding how farming xp would even be an issue? if someone wants to spend few 100 in game hours farning winter spirits, so what? i dunno, not arguing was just wondering why is all.

Think the reason is that the game balance is for the Heroes to be in a certain level range as they progress through the campaign. Allowing for farming of XP would throw off that balance. Also the idea is to promote faster killing of summoners, their primary threat to party is the mobs they bring in not their direct attacks on party members so leaving them alive is like letting other types of foes spend additional turns attacking your party.

Yes, a lot of this is focused on the right balance for a group as they move through the game. If we gave XP for summoned monsters, we lose some ability to easily predict your level.
It is the same reason we don't have respawn areas in the game where you can go find repetitive fights.

It is good in some situations But, there aren't any places where you can walk out of the gates and just fight monsters until the cows come home

And respawned levels are easy for us to include in our calculations.
Not giving XP for summoned monsters means they're low reward -- so you definitely want to take out the summoners.
There is no advantage for ignoring them which was what happened when they created XP granting monsters.
For someone playing the game for ladder, this would ultimately be a critically important thing to do -- let summoners summon waves of monsters. We didn't want that to be a thing, so we simply fixed the reward so that it wouldn't be worth it.

I was looking for threads on Gholla but ended up here for some reason. Anyways, on this topic: I am confused. Don't mobs level with you? So what is the benefit of "farming" XP when mobs proportionately increase in power as well?

What? You are at level 29 at Gholla? I am only at 23. Did I screw myself by doing things out of sequence?!

Gholla can be done at any time. There are 2 reasons I can think of that someone might want to farm experience in this game even though monsters scale with you. One is a lot of zones have level caps on monsters so if you hit that cap and keep levelling the game gets easier. Two, there are most definitely very powerful points in character progression. Hitting one of these power points and then doing a hard area will decrease the difficulty of the game quite a bit (power points vary with build, I typically hit them at level 12-14, level 17-19, level 21-25, level 36-39, level 50ish. These are power points for me in general because I fully Level key talents like Thundering Blades,Flanking Unity, or Strickening or because of substantial equip upgrades)

I really need equipment upgrade - especially weapons - but no cigar as loot has been bad and the shops haven't had much in a while...
