I wish I could equip the captain with just shield and pistol (get rid of the sword). You could focus on ranged attacks, while the shield would give you a good melee defense bonuses. (In my ideal version, there might be a shield-bash talent that did a small amount of damage and stripped xeno mp and/or ap).
Plus, i think the idea is just cool--a shield to keep them off and pistol to blow them away.
Since the Captain has a sword, I have a hard time not putting points into melee-related Talents. It seems weird for the Captain to walk around with a giant sword he only uses for defense when a shield would be so much better.
I'm curious if this has been suggested in the past, or am I the only one to think this way.

We tried it during the alpha, but it didn't work. Without counter-attack from the melee weapon the Captain had major trouble.
We did give it a try, it just didn't make it into the finished game.

Counterattack success = attack with relevant weapon, should be easy except for a hard code for melee weapon only in primary weapon in hand.
OTOH, Templars with shield & pistol = Hellgate London FTW!
