Just like the title says, an extended deployment campaign would be pretty damn cool. Maybe have a set of 2+ missions that require the player to choose X knights and the player can only use those X until the set is complete. Maybe even having damage roll over between the missions?
It would be challenging, but maybe you could use it as a branch for one of the existing sets of missions. You could even have it be written in to the dialogue, something like "This is going to be an extended deployment, so we won't be able to resupply your Templars until you ~, so be careful!"
Is this kind of thing possible with the BF engine?

johndramey - not without leaving a single level. You could feasibly do this, but you'd really finish one set of level objectives and be transported to an area where you could start and finish a second set. You'd never return to the HQ. If you lost during the second set, the entire sequence would have to restart.

Hmm, that could be ok, as well. However, you already have some longer levels in the game. I'll just go with what you and Cory have planned, you two haven't lead me wrong yet.

I'd think the need for extended deployments sort of ended when the ability to buy gear and extra ammo went away.
OTOH, is it possible to lock out the ability to spend RP and/or level up in the HQ area possibly? That could simulate extended deployments I think johndramey is looking for. It wouldn't lock your squad to certain members though.

The only option the game engine supports is what fallen described. We could make extended deployments where you didn't return to the HQ and couldn't bring out new Templars. It is possible, we might experiment with it for some more alternate campaign branches. I'm not 100% sure that it would work very well with difficulty levels where you can abort anytime, however.

Yeah, I was mostly thinking back to TA, but the system works well now. Instead of having multiple, smaller maps you guys made it possible to have one large map. For example, I just finished playing Orbital Defense Battery and that is a perfect example of a BF "extended deployment."
Forgot how fun that map is, by the way. Took my brutal squad 56 turns to do it, but we managed to get through it with 270 kills and no Templar loses. In fact, once I captured the second battery, I was able to deploy my two Berzerkers and my Paladin. They made were then the spearhead to push over to the third battery, pasting anything that even tried to get in the way!
More maps like that!

johndramey - Cory was just saying how it was one of his favorite levels as well. It was a great joint effort to put that one together, and one of our best!

Really is such a fun level. I'm sure it was a huge pain to build and code properly though. Consider my wish changed to that, more levels like Orbital Defense Battery!

There are definitely some options for even larger, longer maps. We wanted to see how people felt about ODB before we deployed them. That level has a lot of Templars and many objectives but we could build even bigger ones =)

That level has a lot of Templars and many objectives but we could build even bigger ones =) Really like ODB as well here. My wish for a larger level would be a multi phase one. Example: Starts with something like the Ferarai Lance: Boarding where you have to secure a couple TP for a number of turns till doors are unlocked. Then you need to navigate through some sort of maze like Hive Ship: Outer Hull. Clearing maze you meet up with say Major Luther or Nyra and a Berserker at another TP and have to clear some obstacle like Prime: Starport Vault. Final phase would be a mad dash to an extraction point. Idea for entire level is that the NPC/s with one or two Templars supporting them got traped on a mission and your squad is got to breach the enemy defenses from another point to reinforce them, complete the mission and get everyone out. Making it all one giant multiphased level means as players we'll have to deal with heat and the extended supply lines add in some secondaries like rescueing civilians or FDF troops and the pressure really builds up.

Related question: what is the true maximum Templar count you can have? Having every single knight on my admittedly overstocked deployed roster would be epic. Lol, I use all the faces for characters so I have 17 knights. Even bigger levels? Yes, please.

Maximum current on any level is 12 Templars.

Maximum current on any level is 12 Templars. Hmm... current he says... dare I ask... 15?...18!?! It was great, I'd forgotten I was on ODB on my current, so after reading this I enjoyed playing it even more! Deck 7 and breaking into the Narv hive are fantastic as well. A level like Deck 7 with an even longer turn count could be Templar nirvana for me. So that means I love multi TP obviously, but I want to give props to the commando series levels as well. Especially those with a generous SP, like mid game on. There really isn't a level I don't like lol, including the tutorials. The only one to piss me off consistently is breaking into ODB, where my poor Pvts never seem to all survive the first three turns. Stabbing, er, saving, Private Ryan indeed! Perhaps a further mission could give those of us who want to see double paladin, double berserk, Hydra/neptune with the captain as a legit deployment by giving an insane SP but balanced with insane level...Stratos on roids. Another twist on these further campaigns could be specialist specific ones, like the Hydra series, but tailored to a class. The fact these new missions always optional makes this viable. For those who aren't running a particular class that the mission called for but wanted to try it, they could recruit a noob or be granted one like Hydra and Paladin are given in missions, and have to use the vets they do have buffed up to protect the poor eggshell noob on his way to target.
