I'm sure I'll eventually improve as a player, but the map choices for EASY level are pretty slim. I've purchased the additional maps, but they are mostly advanced. I know I can lower the xeno to 1, and the AI to easy, but... still getting my butt kicked everytime I try one.
Ultimately, I guess I'd like a medium and a large map that is easy easy easy to let me learn more about the research options, growth, ship building, without the pesky xeno intruding until I'm ready.
Just some thoughts

What do you mean by easy maps? Map difficulty is strictly defined by the number of Xeno, which you have control over.
Is there something I'm missing?

New game > the rim 64x64 (64 worlds), resources average, 2 xenos (easy); game options show normal setting New game > the rim 64x64 (42 worlds), resources average, 2 xenos (hard); game options show normal setting i get that you can reduce number of xeno, and set the difficulty setting, but what is the difference between the two rim maps that would make one hard, one easy? I'm trying to find more maps that are in line with the first one tho, so i can experiment more.

The number of planets per Xeno AI and the size of the map.
I set those values on the maps when we build them ... easy, hard, whatever.
I could flag them all as impossible if I wanted to.
I test the maps with our self-testing system ... basically I run it and count the number of times the auto-playing player wins. From there I estimate difficulty.
Also I tend to flag levels that use the Dark Terrox or Red Zorga as harder, because those AI are so aggressive.

Cory Trese fallen Thank you both for clarifying how you came to characterize each map choice, the insight really helps me understand how they get their 'rating' And yes, I was hoping that there would be a medium and/or large sized 'easy map' available on the add-on map types, Rinze and Degla, which are all 'average to extreme' (which currently eat me for lunch and too much of a challenge to enjoy)
