Why is it that the factions can mine water-fuel from asteroids, but seem to be unable to mine asteroid metals and get income from them? This is a lore question, not a suggestion. There are companies in real life that are looking in to asteroid mining as a future business, and rare metals on earth can be much more easy to find in certain asteroids.
So why don't the factions do it? Does their limitations on computer communications make it less practical? Do the planets they have in the quadrant already have all the rare metals in large quantities they would otherwise want to find in space?

I find the game mechanics of TB games exquisitely balanced. Sure, the game mechanics don't always perfectly reflect a consistent alternate reality, but that's o.k. fun game play is what I want.
That's my long-winded way of saying I don't think lack of mineral mining on asteroids has to be lore-based, it may just be scope-based. The vast majority of games don't perfectly reflect the alternate reality in which they exist.

They mine Asteroids all the time. What makes you think they don't?

They mine Asteroids all the time. What makes you think they don't? I was thinking about asteroid mining and realised there are no mining ships in STRPG, and there is no tech or infrastructure related to mining asteroids in ST4X.

System Minerals and Orbital Mines?
In ST RPG ... Prospector, Mining Freighter, Asteroid Runner?
Anyway, from a Lore POV, Asteroid mining is a big part of ST RPG.

Oh, well... this was not very smart of me I assumed orbital mines were for orbiting planets and mining the same resources as planetary mines.

The Colony in ST 4X represents the habitable part of a Star's orbiting bodies. This might mean that a singe Colony draws resources from several moons, an asteroid belt, etc.
ST2 will help make these distinctions more clear.

On some maps in ST4X, you can mine waterfuel from asteroids that are NOT part of a star system--a/k/a interstellar asteroids. Given that, to me the question was, why can't you mine minerals from interstellar asteroids?
This reminds of past discussions about having space stations in the game that could be built on interstellar squares and would create some green and/or yellow squares around them allowing ships to refuel and/or repair. Given faction/templar technology, this seems possible, but the game doesn't currently support it.

Star Traders 2 will feature Orbitals.
