For the record, I still fly with a Political officer. Why? Yes, I can check the conflicts page, but now I don't have to. She makes my life easier, and that's all you can ask for in an officer. Very much this. I play a merchant on crazy and checking every Time you buy something is a pain in the ass. Political plus tradesman all day

OK, noob to noob. I'm still learning in can't die normal mode. Probably have bad habits or wants left over from playing similar named game on Palm Tungsten years ago. Each game there randomized the universe. Apparently that's not the case here, so eventually I'll recongnize place names, etc. I'm just knocking around until I learn. First tried Merchant, but now am working with default Star Trader and syndicate. I seem to make money on contracts, but not trading. Probably because I don't know WHERE I'm going next and don't see a lot of shortage tumors.
I feel out-of-control with regard to navigation. The nice "forward/play" triangle control at the bottom right seems to have an idea about where to go based on waypoints set in the game, but doesn't seem to care about distance. I'm getting a bit better with gentle long touch on screen to bring up planetary info, but it's still an annoying and iffy method on iOS. Do I really have to carry a paper notepad and download a spreadsheet map to play this here game? Why am I not able to get easy quick information on surrounding planets all at once? What am I not pushing?
Yes, a few hours of play has helped some, but I'm at the bottom of a steep learning curve. Despite the fact that I performed RTFM (Read The Manual, Sir!) before starting.

Hey. Are you using your map that's stashed on the cargo screen?
If you press on a cargo item in any exchange or in your status screen, you may see a list of the buy and sell prices for the item at all exchanges you were in. This utility can help you make or save money on trading.

Pay attention to the Politics Conflict page. A trade with a wrong faction can undo years of hard work raising rep. More than once I check before I land, and there's no trade embargo. Once I land there is one and I trade 80 electronics and also become - 50 with Cadar. Lol great point. And watch permits, ranks and warrants too. I once forgot I lost my home permit, surrenderedd to a weak pirate from home team with a full battleship of gear. This is my favorite stupid mistake to make. Sold 5 electronics, lost my permit. Forgot about it. Then, I'm flying with 101 artifacts to a shortage and I surrender to a home faction pirate. It's a Cadar shuttle, level 6, with 15 cargo space. They took everything. I guess they put 15 in their cargo hold, then lashed the other 86 units to the outside of their hull. I like to think the idiot didn't know about the increased accident modifiers, flew off into red space and blew up after a few squares.

violet a good rule of thumb is that once you've got yourself up and going and encounters aren't an issue, don't surrender to any ship. Especially not pirates. Why? Pirates are finicky and expect you to have some flimsy piece of virtual paper. You sometimes lose that paper through no fault of your own. Sure you blockaded that planet, or destroyed a merchant or two, but they started it your honor! It was their fault! Anyway ... if you surrender to a pirate and you don't have that piece of paper, you automatically get looted. How rude! You can't shoot them in return because they've already shot off in search of the next sucker. What happens if you ignore pirates? Well you have a TP, then they'll ignore you too, and you'll both go off on your merry way. IF you don't have a TP, then they'll turn around and be hostile to you. Assuming you've got an okay ship and good pilot skills, the encounter will be over very quickly in your favor. What's the risk? Okay, the good news is killing a pirate doesn't get you any -ve RP for that faction. That means if a Devaltos Pirate attacks you (and you defeat him), you won't lose any reputation with Devaltos. The bad news is that if Steel Song are allied with Devaltos and you defeat a Devaltos Pirate, you will lose RP with Steel Song. Wait, that's not bad news. Steel Song are always sticking their noses into things and should be smited with regularity. SSS = Smite Steel Song. It's on all of my ships and I've been lobbying Cadar to include it on their flag.

Add small hot dogs to the TP and if they're Cadar pirates they'll be scared of you. Wait,,,, Did you mean a different type of TP slayernz?

Thanks! I thought surrender with TP was like "acknowledge", which as I understand grants XP, unlike "ignore". There'll soon be more pirate debris, since combat yields more XP. I wonder, does the same apply to smugglers?

The amount of XP you get from acknowledge with pirates is minimal ... better just ignore them. In fact, attacking them is fine too because again, you don't lose RP, and you get more XP from defeating ships than you do for being diplomatic

I thought you could disable them, or defeat by boarding with no penalty, but if you killed/ scrapped , looted or enslaved the crew you would still lose RP.

capthawk I can confirm in my brief trial that I killed 2 Rychart pirates (accidentally put large holes in their hull during combat), and salvaged 2 Javat pirates (took out their engines, then salvaged their ship even though they had surrendered). Zero RP impact in each instance.

capthawkNope, no penalty at all. No rank, no permit, no cash penalty, and as there were no alliances, I didn't lose RP with any other faction either. Note: 1. As stated, if faction A and faction B are in alliance, attacking a faction A pirate WILL cause -ve RP on faction B 2. IF faction A and faction B are in solar war, then attacking a faction A pirate will cause a +ve RP for faction B 3. IF faction B is Steel Song, then you really really hope that faction A and faction B are allied. When they are in solar war, it's just plain annoying, and you end up just having to ignore and NOT attacking faction A. Of course, if faction A is Steel Song, then why stop at attacking pirate ships?
