Hey there, I've been playing this game a bit, but discovered a strange pattern. I've done a lot of research on different ship types, i.e. Battlecruiser or Carrier, Heavy Carrier and so on, but I don't see them in the list "build New Ships". And I've done almost full research on ship/reactor types, i.e. I try to clear all types of different research in the area. So what's missing? Do I need to make a specific research in the colony area, like Factory 4-5 or something else to build these ships? Thanks for all the answers.

Yea this comes up with the later or faction specific ships. There's no "canned" or default ship design for them (its been talked about a bit).
So. Just go to the Ship tab, hot "Designer" at the top, then press "New Design" ay the top again. Once you get to that tab it'll show you all the ship hulls you've researched and what mods they use. Go click on your Battlecruiser or what not, design a model and have fun!

YeS!!! Thanks a lot, I've found it! Thulun cutters, Battlecruisers, all there.

Great news, sorry about that. I've had trouble making canned designs for those ship types because it is very hard to predict what technologies are available to the player.

True...though with the Thulun Cutter at least, I believe you'll unlock one of everything on the way to it. The "Starship Construction 10" you could change so that you unlock a Plasma Cannon along with the Heavy Carrier. (I'm assuming the "Shuttle" in the weapon design is the "Boarding Shuttle" that's listed?) I believe with a little fine-tuning/shuffling you could make at least one of every module be researched by the time you unlock the ship. Granted, for the later ones you'd then have a few really weak modules in some cases, but...might be an idea to play around with.

Yeah, that was the first approach I tried -- it seemed like a pretty good solution, and not too complex.
The problem is that the "on the path" techs, if powerful enough, damage the Tech Tree's design -- so that balance has to be given priority, as it is one of the most important balance foundations in 4X.
The player-side issue comes up when you build those "first on the path" ship designs -- it turns out, they're pretty bad and pretty expensive.
In testing with did the result is high underwhelming and I'm afraid players would be frustrated by this -- more so than needing to make their own designs.
I think the royal edition of this builder actually sniffs the tech tree, balances mass and picks optimal components ... more of an "auto-design" feature than a canned ship.
Obviously, a ship designing AI isn't trivial to build =)

I don't suppose there's anyplace nice to put a message about checking the "New Design" tab for all those ships without canned designs? Guess we'll just have to draw them to the forums somehow, hehe.
