I was being attacked by thugs and one thug could attack me from his position but I could not attack him from mine. Ill try to make a diagram.

Fair enough! Had a sneaking suspicion that the game engine only checked player LOS.

Fair enough! Had a sneaking suspicion that the game engine only checked player LOS. Sorry if that wasn't clear. The LoS is not mirrored, meaning that the calculation made from point A to B is not gauranteed to match B to A, depending on intervening terrain. Enemies are checked for LoS.

Enemies use the same LoS algo as players.
If the enemy can shoot from A to B, then you can shoot from A to B as well.
This does NOT mean that both parties can shoot from B to A.
You'll mostly see this rule in effect when taking cover around corners.
It is intentional.
