I had been playing on normal and was definitely enjoying the game, but I could never commit to losing a Templar. I'd abort and restart every time. The threat of permanent loss was too tempting to pass up. I kept thinking about how it would heighten the game play and bring tension. So, after the UI update I decided to start a game on Ironman.
Airlock Chambers.
It was Airlock Chambers where I felt the pain of loss. I had come out of the gate strong. My battleforce had just closed the 1st airlock behind us. Heat was starting to build but so was the amount of Xeno so I decided to keep the up the pace. Xarn, my scout, was the first to go. He was the one I sent to close the gate while the rest of the team moved to open the 2nd airlock. I took a chance on the fog of war and sent him into the unknown. After Xarn closed the gate a Hunter ripped him to shreds. I sat there staring at my phone for a good 5 minutes not playing. Just thinking about what I wanted to do and how I felt. Screw it. Move on. Death before dishonor. I felt the thematic sense build when I resolved to make Xarn's sacrifice count. About a turn later my team had opened the 2nd airlock - and was completely trapped. I threw everything I had at the approaching wave of Xeno but it was only a matter of time. They made it past the overwatch zone and killed my soldier. That hurt. "OK" I thought. "Fine". This will be the story of how my commander was the only one to make it out alive. With my last 2 templars I made a dash to close the 2nd airlock. Just a few steps out of the hallway my engineer was slaughtered and a turn later my commander was a pile of mush. It was Airlock Chambers where I felt the pain of complete and utter defeat.
I'm now starting my 2nd game on ironman. I don't think I'll ever go back. New Templars and new names, but the same faces staring back at me. Kind of a weird feeling.
10/10
Would watch my entire team die again.
