The party of heroes had finally fought their way up from the hidden depths below Red Hill to the Gatehouse. It had been a bloody affair but despite all obstacles they had persevered and the trail of bodies left in their wake was staggering.
But this is what they'd come for, a chance to open the gates so that Barnett's army might storm the castle.
As they approached across the narrow walkway towards the mechanism Captain Geraux, now proclaiming himself General, appeared with a host of archers and Arhaive Elites blocking their access to the mechanism.
A look behind showed a smaller force led by an Orcin Warboy was attempting to cut off retreat and pin them on the walkway.
Tamilin let out a cry and charged back towards the Warboy, Fyona on her heels.
Kjartan fired off a Choking Ash spell on the Warboy and the soldier standing near him then quickly followed the two ladies with Kincaid covering his back.
Fyona cursed the Warboy and soldier with Holy Strickening as Tamilin started flinging her throwing spikes at them and another soldier and archer nearby in an attempt to slow them.
Fyona stepped off the walkway beside Tamilin and delivered a mighty blow with her blessed Chaplain's Heavy Mace that had been her reward from the town of Oskahold.
Another handful of throwing spikes from Kincaid put the startled Warboy down before he could even lift his great spear.
The abrupt action of the party had momentarily caught their enemies by surprise, but now a withering hail of arrows rained down on them along with another soldier closing ranks with the first two attempting to block Fyona and Tamilin from clearing the foot of the walkway.
Staggered by the assualt but still standing they quickly downed healing potions.
Kjartan fired off two more Choking Ash spells catching all the soldiers blocking them and the 2 archers backing them. Fyona called down Holy Strickening on the soldiers then set to with her mace, while Kincaid and Tamilin threw fistfuls of spikes. The onslaught was to much and the soldiers went down in a rush along with one of the archers.
However a a continuing hail of arrows from the archers near Geraux and an Arhive Elite closing behind Kincaid on the walkway kept things tense.
Finally the party fought free of the narrow confines of the walkway Tamilin putting down the final archer then wheeling about her own bow in hand to send a Silent Stalker shot into the Elite cracking his armor before Kincaid using Captain Lukai's Blade hammered him down with Crippling strikes.
Momentarily out of range from the archers near Geraux, they took a moment to consume more potions and renew their defenses before the next Elite and the archers started crossing the bridge.
Kincaid stepped up with his Sure Parry to prevent the enemy from leaving the walkway and threatening his companions, Fyona at his side while Kjartan set to clearing the archers with Firebolts laced with Electricity and Ice and Tamilin with her Aimed Shots all weapons and arrows flaming thanks to Kjartan's Burning Blades.
Seeing his forces being decimated Geraux finally charged onto the walkway to face a vengeful Kincaid blade to blade a Hund at his heels.
Kjartan blasted him and his hund with Choking Ash, Fyona once again called down Holy Strickening on them then landed a mighty blow with her mace before stepping aside for Kincaid. Tamilin shot Geraux with Silent Stalker rending his armor then showered both master and hund with spikes slowing Geraux and killing the hund.
Kincaid erupted with a string of taunts as he layed into his nemesis with Crippling Strikes, blow after blow finding their mark.
A final sizzling Firebolt from Kjartan was more than Geraux could take and he was down his cursed blade falling to the ground and dissappearing in a puff of smoke.
With grim purpose the heroes rushed to the now undefended gate mechanism and swung them open to the cheers and battle cries from Barnett and his men.
The battle for Red Hill was still far from over but now the heroes had more than a few minutes to rest in some hidden corner. But the rest wouldn't last long, the Orcin Groth, Magus Lazzon and Baron Arhaive still lurked somewhere in the keep above them and all must be brought to the same justice as Geraux faced.
