The Crew size will range from a 6 to 60 ... yes, there is a massive amount of work needed The game already supports Crews of up to 16 individually generated and active characters. That's about the size of a BF maximum squad (although the current maps limit you to 12.) Crew member's personality traits will clash with each other. For example, G. Tazzar hates Rychart. She looses Morale every time I recruit Rychart. This guy D. White is a sadist ... his morale goes up when people are injured in accidents. I've got another member of the Crew, Rachel, she's obsessed with death. When people die, she recovers morale. I've also got a Navigator Officer who suffers from gravity sickness, so any time we land he looses morale. The system has to run in simulator very, very fast on average PC and smartphones, so we won't be simulating individual shifts on the ship, or which crew are in close proximity to each other. They won't form relationships, but they will have other Crew who cause them problems or give them bonuses. Actually a question in regards to the crew maximum. Late games perhaps could we hire unnamed crew for the really big ships? Like in 40k you have the ranked elite I.e the sixty named crew; but beyond this you have unnamed armsmen or wageslaves who assist with a certain aspect of the ships performance. This would only be available on large capital ships and even then with a certain upgrade; I.e extra crew quarters/ merc accompaniment.

Nope, every Crew is a character.
Anytime someones says "like 40K" I am filled with an overwhelming desire to do the exact opposite.
On big ships you're going to be recruiting a lot more. In my current game I have a Crew of 45 and I recruit level 1 people like crazy just to fill the compartments with workers. They die a lot and I don't care. but they're still full fledged characters.

Ok, so some possible ideas for conflicts.
Quarantine: A sickness is loose on this world, landing in the Urban Zone risks Captain health damage( Rolled based on Strength level) and risks crew dying.(Also perhaps create a medical item trade unit that could be used to make bank in this situation + protect against damage and crew loss.
Blockade: A forced alienation of the world in question, causing rep damage with the enforcing faction if the captain decides to land.(A roll based off the captains stealth stat could avoid the rep damage).
^ Also in this area, could stealth become more of an aspect in trading/rep loss? Like in ST1 if you violate a trade embargo but the palace is closed there is no rep loss; perhaps if a captain's stealth skill is high enough, the rep loss can be potentially avoided thus making the Smuggler potentially huge.
edit I have more! Not a conflict, but a random event --> discover-able by Rumor: There's been a large void battle; traveling to this location adds the potential for salvage i.e guns, torps, perhaps some supplies; but with risk of conflict.
And perhaps late game if you're REALLY unlucky, an alien attack can render a planet either temporarily uninhabitable or completely dead.

Quarantine would be an interesting Rumor ... Templar ships are currently putting a world under Quarantine.
I just added that to the game as a rumor. Great idea =)

One thing I'd like to see changed (I haven't read the earlier posts all that much, so this might have been stated earlier) is how your role plays into things. If I'm a military officer in a solar war, then I should have the right to attack any Javat I please. Or if I find a trade vessel carrying illegal goods, they should be marked and I should be able to confiscate them. If I'm a bounty hunter, hunting a target in De Valtos space, then I should be able to just hunt him down (Of course this would depend on some things. A serial killer and spy should have different affects on your reputation). I just feel like my role never actually did anything for me, besides making a few mundane things cheaper. This has been one of the other things about ST that annoyed me just a bit. I hate getting stopped in my own faction space by some other faction that has detected illegal cargo because I don't have a permit with them. Or Independents that do the same thing. Their not suppose to care about trade permits ,yet they'll enforce them. I would like in ST 2 that when I'm in my home faction space to be the one doing the stopping and enforcing and confiscating.

Sorry ... you're a Star Trader, not a Faction warship. We will do our best to make ST2 an improvement over ST RPG, but we cannot eliminate all the game's mechanics or it will become flat. What one person reports as slightly annoying other people report as their favorite part of the game. We will do our best to maintain a balance between all the parties.

Fine by me Cory Trese. ST is great now. ST2 will be even more so. Just throwing out ideas at the moment.
